Il 6 luglio 1815, nei sobborghi di Grenoble, uno squadrone di carabinieri a cavallo caricò i francesi che stavano già abbandonando le proprie posizioni. Era la fine delle guerre napoleoniche e l'inizio della storia militare dell'«Arma fedelissima», istituita l'anno precedente da re Vittorio Emanuele I di Savoia: da allora i carabinieri hanno partecipato a tutti i principali conflitti in cui si è trovato coinvolto prima il regno di Sardegna e poi l'Italia unita - guerre d'Indipendenza, guerre coloniali e guerre mondiali - non soltanto svolgendo il loro ruolo istituzionale di sorveglianza delle retrovie e delle comunicazioni, e in generale tutti i compiti di polizia militare, ma portando in prima linea reparti combattenti costituiti da volontari dell'Arma. Nei secoli fedele è la prima storia non ufficiale a ripercorrere le gesta dei carabinieri in battaglia: dalla celebre carica di Pastrengo del 30 aprile 1848, quando gli squadroni della scorta di Carlo Alberto si trovarono sotto il fuoco nemico e finirono per decidere le sorti dello scontro, allo sfortunato assalto del 19 luglio 1915 sul Podgora, di fronte a Gorizia, alla disperata resistenza sul «passo delle euforbie», ultimo baluardo dell'impero africano, fino alla tragedia di Nassiriya del 12 novembre 2003, quando la base «Maestrale» della MSU - la Multinational Specialized Unit, reparto speciale addestrato in operazioni di peace-keeping - venne attaccata e distrutta da attentatori suicidi appartenenti alla cellula di al Qa'ida in Iraq. Nove episodi, nove storie esemplari di uomini in guerra che vengono inseriti e spiegati nel più vasto contesto storico e militare, prima di farli rivivere nei particolari, davanti agli occhi del lettore, attraverso i documenti e le memorie dei protagonisti. Battaglie vinte e perdute, ma sempre combattute con spirito di sacrificio e senso dell'onore da soldati italiani il cui ricordo può insegnare molto alle nostre generazioni più fortunate, che possono godere, anche grazie a loro, dell'inestimabile dono della pace.

A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools is a nondenominational, ecumenical collection of over 400 hymns and 100 psalms designed especially for worship services in academic communities. Hymns and spiritual songs are drawn from many countries and many different traditions. A number of hymns appear in their original languages, as well as in English translations. Throughout the hymnal, gender-inclusive language is used wherever possible. The psalms, for example, depend heavily on inclusive-language versions prepared by the United Methodist Church and the National Council of Churches. Also included are many hymns written in the past quarter-century, as well as new texts and music commissioned especially for this collection. The ample selection of hymns by Americans includes the work of hymn writers, composers, and authors such as Aaron Copland, Emma Lou Diemer, Alice Parker, Virgil Thomson, Richard Proulx, Robert Frost, and John Updike.
