"The ten essays deal with colonial Spanish America, Surinam and Curacao, colonial Brazil, the French Antilles, Saint Domingue, Jamaica, Barbados, the North American slave states, Cuba, and nineteenth-century Brazil . . . . One also gets a strong sense from these papers of the rich variation within each society . . . . An important book."—Journal of Southern History "A distinctive contribution to the enticing but treacherous domain of comparative history. It succeeds because it is written by qualified scholars who address a delimited, manageable subject . . . . The task was to canvass current knowledge and pinpoint areas of needed research regarding two topics: first, the experience of the free colored as a measure of the character of slavery and race relations; second, the fundamental roles of this group in the evolution of the respective societies."—American Historical Review

The tectonic forces of falling birth-rates and aging populations are slowly but surely changing demographic landscapes in the West. But unlike the inevitability of aging, the underlying causes and effects of our waning capacity to reproduce are not as well known or understood. Involuntary childlessness is increasingly a fact of life for many Western women and couples. Yet we view it narrowly in terms of infertility and limited concepts of grief and loss. We also know very little about how they adjust to life without children and reconstruct their identities and relationships. This study is a probing and insightful analysis of the experience of the involuntarily childless and offers lessons for policy-makers and health professionals. For the childless, it is a guide to a hitherto unacknowledged alternative pathway to personal, self development and other forms of generativity.

Summary: Childlessness, whether voluntary, involuntary or circumstantial, is becoming more common in our society. Statistically, greater numbers of Australian women and their Western counterparts will not bear children, thereby creating a larger quantum of couple families. The unwelcome socio-economic consequences have prompted research into reproductive intentions and behaviour to address barriers to reproduction. Studying those who are childless by \U+2018\choice' or \U+2018\infertile' provides important \U+2018\reference points' but also creates a myopic view of the childless that often overlooks circumstantial factors or ignores the fluctuating nature of fertility intentions. Moreover, the medical discourse on infertility has conditioned our thinking and focused research on the psycho-social effects and impacts of assisted reproduction treatment and its failure. This has blurred and obscured the distinction between infertility and involuntary childlessness. Too often these are viewed through the same prism of grief and bereavement as a temporary but pervasive \U+2018\crisis' and as impediments to adult development in the long term. The thesis provides new insights that challenge our conventional ways of thinking particularly its findings that although infertility and childlessness are related, they are separate phenomena. This has wide-ranging implications, especially for reformulating related clinical practice and counselling. There are several important considerations. One is the finding that the grief and bereavement model has its limitations beyond the infertility stage. Another is the theoretical reconstruction that the thesis provides of the grief that the involuntary childless experience. Finally, it makes a strong case for a more appropriate alternative which the thesis argues should be based on a growth-oriented model. ......

The global trend of declining fertility rates and an increasingly ageing population has serious implications for individuals and institutions alike. Childless men are mostly excluded from ageing, social science and reproduction scholarship and almost completely absent from most national statistics. This unique book examines the lived experiences of a hidden and disenfranchised population: men who wanted to be fathers. It explores the complex intersections that influence childlessness over the life course.
