Scrivendo sms si risvegliano i pollici intorpiditi invece di usare i più evoluti indici, ma si ottiene una prosa sciatta e approssimativa, che deve sostenersi con l'aiuto di «faccine». Informazioni che tenevamo a mente (a partire dai numeri di telefono) sono trasferite su memorie esterne, indebolendo per conseguenza la nostra. Insomma, i media che ci circondano (e che formano quella che questo libro chiama mediasfera) modificano in profondità le nostre abitudini, il nostro uso del corpo e soprattutto le operazioni della nostra mente. Inoltre, ci interpellano in modo perentorio e irresistibile, inducendoci a esser «connessi» senza interruzione, perfino maniacalmente. Presi nella rete esamina lucidamente, e con fitti riferimenti al passato, la mente ai tempi del web, cioè i cambiamenti che la mediasfera produce nella mente, una rivoluzione inavvertita che è ancora più vasta e penetrante di quella che Platone paventava nel Fedro a proposito dell'avvento della scrittura. Il riassestarsi della gerarchia degli organi di senso, il sorgere di inedite forme di intelligenza, la metamorfosi del testo scritto e la virtuale scomparsa del concetto di «autore», gli slittamenti del modo di leggere e scrivere, la nascita di forme di vita «fasulle» che si scambiano di continuo con quelle «reali», le torsioni nel modo di raccontare storie e di rappresentarsi il passato, sono solo alcune delle dimensioni di questa rivoluzione che qui vengono analizzate e rispetto alle quali si offrono criteri per formarsi un'idea non passivamente euforica. L'ultimo capitolo contiene la prima analisi di un perturbante fenomeno che cresce in tutto il mondo, e che è anch'esso un cambiamento inaspettato: i movimenti di piazza mediati e regolati telematicamente, dagli Indignados in poi.
