Gemma Messori è nata in Venezuela, nel 1959, ha vissuto in vari luoghi (in Italia e all’estero) e ora vive sull’isola d’Elba. Ha fatto l’interprete e l’insegnante, dedicandosi unitamente al teatro e alla scrittura. Dal 2009 si è dedicata solo a scrivere e recitare, sia in teatro che in festival. Ha prodotto libri di narrativa, poesie, racconti, favole e testi teatrali. Ha collaborato a un romanzo tradotto in esperanto ed è coautrice di un manuale di letteratura spagnola. Ha vinto vari premi, fra cui il Primo Premio per la Letteratura alla Biennale di Arte Contemporanea di Roma (2001, 2003). Suoi scritti sono inseriti in varie antologie. Nel 2015, a causa di una grave malattia, si è dovuta fermare all’improvviso. Dopo una lunga riabilitazione, ha ricominciato a scrivere, vincendo il Premio della Giuria Popolare Donna Olimpia Frangipane (2019), il Premio Speciale Donna (2020) e il terzo posto al Premio “Ascoltando i silenzi del mare” (2022). Questo libro è la sua biografia romanzata.

In this provocative study of eight novels, Karen E. Beardslee asserts that American writers often engage with folk traditions as a necessary part of their characters journeys to wholeness. Focusing not only on African American, Native American, and Hispanic American cultures but also on women s culture, Beardslee traces the connections between folk legacies and the search for selfhood in both nineteenth- and twentieth-century works. Within each chapter, a novel by a contemporary author and one from an earlier period are brought together: Whitney Otto s How to Make an American Quilt and Harriet Beecher Stowe s The Minister s Wooing; David Bradley s The Chaneysville Incident and Charles Chesnutt s The Conjure Woman; Leslie Marmon Silko s Ceremony and Zitkala-Sa s American Indian Stories; and Roberta Fernandez s Intaglio and Maria Cristina Mena s The Birth of the God of War. These pairings are not based on matters of intertextuality or influence but are chosen according to the folk groups to which the novels characters belong. This strategy enables Beardslee to trace the particular legacies that inform the work of the twentieth-century authors. As Beardslee notes, contemporary texts and the critical commentary on them have focused, until fairly recently, on the search for self in male (usually white) characters. Such works have also positioned that search outside the character s family or community and have usually emphasized its futility. With the growing shift toward multiculturalism in fiction, however, folk traditions have come to play an increasingly crucial role in characters journeys to self-awareness as well as in the success of those journeys. Thoroughly researched and cogently argued, this book makes a significant contribution to the study of both folklore and literature as it explores the relationship between knowing one s cultural heritage and achieving a sense of self that is whole instead of fragmented, connected instead of drifting. The complex nature of globalization increasingly requires a comparative approach to literature in order to understand how migration and commodity flows impact aesthetic production and expressive practices. This special issue of Symbolism: An International Journal of Critical Aesthetics explores the trans-American dimensions of Latina/o literature in a trans-Atlantic context. Examining the theoretical implications suggested by the comparison of the global North-global South dynamics of material and aesthetic exchange, this volume highlights emergent Latina/o authors, texts, and methodologies of interest in for comparative literary studies. In the essays, literary scholars address questions of the transculturation, translation, and reception of Latina/o literature in the United States and Europe. In the interviews, emergent Latina/o authors speak to the processes of creative writing in a transnational context. This volume suggests how the trans-American dialogues found in contemporary Latina/o literature elucidates trans-Atlantic critical dialogues.
