Here Mohammad Salama argues that the events of 9/11 force us to engage ourselves fully, without preconditions, in understanding not just the history of Islam as a religion, but of Islam as a historical condition that has existed in relationship to the West since the seventh century. Salama compares the Arab-Islamic and European traditions of historical thought since the early modern period, focusing on the watershed moments that informed the two traditions' ideas of intellectual history and perceptions of one another. He draws attention to European intellectual history's entangled links with the Islamic philosophy of history, especially the complexities of orientalism and modernity. Recent critical reflections on the work of Ibn Khald?n confirm this intertwined and troubled relationship, reflecting major disparities and contradictions. At the same time, recent Arab writings on Europe's intellectual history reveal a struggle against erasure and intellectual superiority. This is the third book in the series “Islam and the West”. The West here is atheism as it currently represents Western high-culture. It is based on the premises that atheism is exclusively the legacy of Western Christianity and the Western fallacy out of sheer ignorance of considering Islam as a Christian heresy that suffers whatever shortcomings Christianity may have. Atheism took center stage with the rise of European enlightenment that sent its ideals across the Atlantic to form the intellectual foundation of the founding fathers of the American republic. Atheism dismantled Western Christianity avoiding all moral arguments while taking full advantage of the presumably absurd biblical statements about material physical issues such as the age of the universe and instantaneous creation. While this is patently an internal Western squabble, atheists unabashedly drag Islam into the brawl. Western self-centeredness cannot shake off bigotry and innate historical hatred of Islam even after renouncing Christianity. To make that point, the book ascertains the historical fact that the celebrated “Western Civilization” is simply nothing more than a product of the “Islamic Civilization” in the sense that all civilizations produce their offspring without exception as none come from a void. It does that through discussing Muslim scholars’ contributions to building an Islamic way of life and Westerners absorbing such massive structure at known geographical points of contact. Atheistic arguments are analyzed vis-a-vis well established Islamic norms and are found wanting. A rule of thumb is established that Islam alone can be discussed as a true representative of “Religion” as opposed to atheism. Since atheism’s newfound religion is “Science”, its major foundations and breakthroughs till the present are discussed. Islam’s sacred statements are then shown to be emphatically reconcilable with all findings of modern science without exception. These are the “Fruits of Knowledge”.

This book is a case study in the literary, psychoanalytic, and theological encounters between diasporic Muslim intellectuals and secular western modernity. It centres on the simultaneous search for the possibility of both a reformation of Islamic fundamentalism and a transformation of the exclusionary limitations of western public institutions. With roots in original research in the fields of comparative religion and cultural studies, and drawing on sources in English, French, and Arabic, the author introduces and elaborates the concept of "Western-Islamic public sphere". This concept defines what is at stake in the formative play of public representations where traditionalist foundations and modernist adaptations meet, clash, and produce discourse around their common disequilibrium. The Western-Islamic public sphere (which is secular but not secularist and which is Islamic but not Islamist), within which a critical Islamic intellectual universe can unfold, deals hermeneutically with texts and politically with lived practices. It emerges from within the arc of two alternative, conflicting, yet equally dismissive suspicions defined by a view that critical Islam is the new imperial rhetoric of hegemonic orientalism and the opposite view that critical Islam is just fundamentalism camouflaged in liberal rhetoric. This book utilizes the gender polemics of neo-Islams selective employment of a historical narrative which dwells disproportionately on the militant Islam of the post-immigration (hijra) period when the sword substituted the word for the spread of a spiritual faith. Given the fact that such neo-Islamists, like very many unlettered Muslims, mistake religion for history and vice versa, Al Dami justifiably hypothesizes that neo-Islam is not Islam. It is not the Islam of the God-fearing and virtuous mosque-goers as it propagates a cult of conflict, violence and hatred, rather than the faith of peace from which it derives its very Arabic name, salam. Neo-Islams theorists manufactured their own puritanical concepts of religious renewal, holy war and state-building in an endeavor to mobilize young zealots to restore power in the Islamic World to a reformed Islam through their form of government, better known as the caliphate, a government which had deteriorated, failed and, eventually, lost its historical state for fierce foreign foes due to proven flaws. To activate the above renovation program, the neo-Islamists retreated to history for Shii Islams opposition techniques and secret societies (such as those of the Brethren of Purity and the Order of the Assassins) for inspiration and expertise to fulfill their ancestral dream of building a global Islamic state in the future. As they adopted the masculine vs. feminine polemic, which was originally inspired by a desert low opinion of womanhood and by a post-colonial retrospective conception, the neo-Islamists proceeded on in an attempt to feminize the Western World. It is meant to reverse the discourse of the Industrial West which is conceived to have opportunely penetrated into a feminized, veiled Islamic World in times of passivity and frailty. To develop the above argument, Professor Al Dami explores various formulations of neo-Islam as those of the Wahabis, the Muslim Brothers and the later terror groups with a specific reference to their common principles and goals.
