Der Glaskünstler Volkhard Precht aus dem thüringischen Lauscha ist der Wegbereiter der Studioglaskunst in der DDR. Zeitgleich und doch unabhängig vom weltweiten "Studioglass-Movement" schlug er in den 1960er Jahren seinen ganz individuellen Weg ein, der, trotz der kulturpolitischen und künstlerischen Beschränkungen der DDR erstaunliche Parallelen zur internationalen Bewegung aufwies. So begründete Precht eine freie künstlerische Glaskunst mit, indem er die Studioglas-Kunst in der DDR voranbrachte und dadurch den Studioglas-Begriff etablierte. Seine Vorreiterrolle ist jedoch bis heute kaum bekannt. Im vorliegenden Buch wird Volkhard Prechts künstlerischer Werdegang nachgezeichnet und das restriktive Kunst- und Kultursystem der DDR mit besonderem Fokus auf die Bereiche Kunsthandwerk und Glaskunst dargestellt. Zudem erfährt die Studioglas-Bewegung der DDR erstmals eine wissenschaftliche Betrachtung.
