Darstellungen des Volkslebens haben Hochkonjunktur in der bürgerlichen Bild- und Textproduktion um 1900. Petra Naumann untersucht diese Hinwendung zur Volkskultur und stellt die Frage, inwiefern sie als Reaktion auf Modernisierungserfahrungen im bürgerlichen Alltag verstanden werden kann. Das Material für ihre Szenen-Analysen liefern Landleben-Bilder, Buchillustrationen, Bildpostkarten und volkskundliche Texte. Mit einer symboltheoretisch wie psychoanalytisch fundierten Kulturanalyse belegt die Autorin, dass die bewusste Distanz zu technischen und zivilisatorischen Errungenschaften, welche diese Bilder auf den ersten Blick charakterisiert, nur eine kulturelle Oberfläche bildet. In sensiblen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Material kann sie zeigen, dass sich darunter existenzvergewissernde und zugleich auch modernisierungsfreudige kulturelle Praxen verbergen. Damit geht Naumann einen entscheidenden Schritt weiter als herkömmliche ideologiekritische und diskursanalytische Lesarten, welche diese Bilder und Texte als konservative, eskapistische oder kompensatorische kulturelle Formen ansprechen wollen. Es eröffnen sich völlig neue Perspektiven für die Erforschung westlicher Modernisierungsprozesse - insbesondere aber auf die trügerische Vorstellung von einem linearen Fortschrittsprozess.

This book brings together fifteen essays investigating aspects of interculturality. Like its author, it operates at the borderline between social anthropology and intercultural philosophy. It seeks to make a contribution to intercultural philosophy, by formulating with great precision and painful honesty the lessons deriving from extensive intercultural experiences as an anthropologist. Its culminating section presents an intercultural philosophy revolving on the tenet 'cultures do not exist'. The kaleidoscopic nature of intercultural experiences is reflected in the diversity of these texts. Many belong to a field that could be described as "meta-anthropology", others are more clearly philosophical; occasionally they spill over into belles lettres, ancient history, and comparative cultural and religious studies.
