Eine spontane Antwort darauf wird bei den meisten Befragten höchstwahrscheinlich subjektiv geprägt sein, je nach persönlichem Geschmack und individuellen Vorlieben. Tatsächlich begleitet die Frage die Menschheit schon seit über 2300 Jahren – zumindest reichen die schriftlich überlieferten Aufzeichnungen bis dahin zurück. Eine Vielzahl von bekannten Philosophen und Dichtern hat sich seitdem mit der Ästhetik beschäftigt: Beginnend bei Platon, Aristoteles, Plotin bis hin zu Kant, Hegel und Nietzsche. Die Geschichte der Ästhetik hat ihren Ursprung im antiken Griechenland. Dort begründete Platon die erste systematische Ästhetik und schuf den Grundstein für alle weiteren ästhetischen Überlegungen, selbst für seine größten Kritiker wie zum Beispiel Nietzsche. Weitere wirkmächtige antike Philosophen der Ästhetikgeschichte waren Aristoteles, der wohl bekannteste Schüler Platons, und Plotin, der mit seiner Platon-Vergegenwärtigung die letzte große, antike, philosophische Strömung begründete: den Neuplatonismus. Beide entwickelten eigene Ideen und Überzeugungen zur Ästhetik, natürlich immer unter Rückgriff auf Platons Philosophie. Die zentrale Fragestellung der nachfolgenden Untersuchung lautet daher, wie Plotins Position zwischen Platons und Aristoteles zu verorten ist. Als Arbeitsthese dient Lambert Wiesings Aussage, wie entscheidend – aber auch wie unterschiedlich – die Stellung der Ästhetik in einem idealistischen System sein kann. Eine vergleichende Analyse der verschiedenen Ideen, Ansichten und Überzeugungen ermöglicht eine Einordnung ihres Wirkens für die Ästhetikgeschichte und kann dadurch rückblickend die philosophische Bedeutung ihrer Überlegungen verdeutlichen.

Paramount in the shaping of early Byzantine identity was the construction of the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (532-537 CE). This book examines the edifice from the perspective of aesthetics to define the concept of beauty and the meaning of art in early Byzantium. Byzantine aesthetic thought is re-evaluated against late antique Neoplatonism and the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius that offer fundamental paradigms for the late antique attitude towards art and beauty. These metaphysical concepts of aesthetics are ultimately grounded in experiences of sensation and perception, and reflect the ways in which the world and reality were perceived and grasped, signifying the cultural identity of early Byzantium. There are different types of aesthetic data, those present in the aesthetic object and those found in aesthetic responses to the object. This study looks at the aesthetic data embodied in the sixth-century architectural structure and interior decoration of Hagia Sophia as well as in literary responses (ekphrasis) to the building. The purpose of the Byzantine ekphrasis was to convey by verbal means the same effects that the artefact itself would have caused. A literary analysis of these rhetorical descriptions recaptures the Byzantine perception and expectations, and at the same time reveals the cognitive processes triggered by the Great Church. The central aesthetic feature that emerges from sixth-century ekphraseis of Hagia Sophia is that of light. Light is described as the decisive element in the experience of the sacred space and light is simultaneously associated with the notion of wisdom. It is argued that the concepts of light and wisdom are interwoven programmatic elements that underlie the unique architecture and non-figurative decoration of Hagia Sophia. A similar concern for the phenomenon of light and its epistemological dimension is reflected in other contemporary monuments, testifying to the pervasiveness of these aesthetic values in early Byzantium.

The open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. In this book, Ota Gál presents a new analysis of Plotinus' conception of beauty, beginning from a close reading of treatises I.6 and V.8, which link beauty with the unified multiplicity of Intellect. This account is subsequently placed in a hierarchical and structural context in VI.2 and VI.6 and connected to illumination in VI.7, enabling us to determine the meaning of the predicate “beauty” at different ontological levels. For Plotinus, beauty is ultimately the illuminated unity in multiplicity of Intellect, which, as the manifestation of the Good, simultaneously enables the soul’s ascent and threatens to bind the soul to itself.

Technical automation – the ability of man-made (or god-made) objects to move and act autonomously – is not just the province of engineering or science fiction. In this book, Maria Gerolemou, by taking as her starting point the close semantic and linguistic relevance of technical automation to natural automatism, demonstrates how ancient literature, performance and engineering were often concerned with the way nature and artifice interacted. Moving across epic, didactic, tragedy, comedy, philosophy and ancient science, this is a brilliant assembly of evidence for the power of 'automatic theatre' in ancient literature. Gerolemou starts with the earliest Greek literature of Homer and Hesiod, where Hephaestus' self-moving artefacts in the Iliad reflect natural forces of motion and the manufactured Pandora becomes an autonomous woman. Her second chapter looks at Greek drama, where technical automation is used to augment and undermine nature not only through staging and costume but also in plot devices where statues come to life and humans behave as automatic devices. In the third chapter, Gerolemou considers how the philosophers of the 4th century BCE and the engineers of the Hellenistic period with their mechanical devices contributed to a growing dialogue around technical automation and how it could help its audience glance and marvel at the hidden mechanisms of self-motion. Durch den Aufweis, dass allein das ‚Ich denke’ durch keinen Zweifel in Frage gestellt werden kann, hat Descartes im Sinn einer langen philosophiegeschichtlichen Tradition eine epochale Wende des Denkens auf sich selbst bewirkt und eine unreflektiert naive Ausrichtung auf die äußeren Dinge überwunden. Obwohl viele cartesianische Positionen heute als problematisch oder sogar als überholt beurteilt werden, scheint diese ihm zugeschriebene Wende ein Standpunkt zu sein, hinter den kein modernes Denken mehr zurückfallen darf. Die Tatsache, dass Descartes die Sicherheit des ‚Ich denke’ darauf gründet, dass es ‚clare et distincte’ erkennbar sei, während die Anschauung nur zu dunklen und konfusen Erkenntnissen führe, wird in diesem Buch zum Anlass genommen, einen Blick zurück auf Platon zu werfen, der zum ersten Mal an eben diesen Kriterien Anschauung und Verstand unterschieden hat. Das frappierende Ergebnis dieses Vergleichs ist, dass auch Platons ‚Seinsphilosophie’ auf einer Reflexion des Denkens auf seine sicheren Grundlagen beruht, dass er aber dabei zu einem grundlegend anderen Begriff des Denkens gekommen ist. Die Überzeugung, die Antike sei durch ein seiner selbst bewusstes Denken in der Moderne überwunden worden, erweist sich als ein Vorurteil, das den Eindruck erweckt, die von Platon über Aristoteles bis ins hohe Mittelalter vertretene ‚Seinsphilosophie’ sei ‚nur noch’ historisch verstehbar, eine systematische Auseinandersetzung um die Sache sei nicht mehr sinnvoll. Am Beispiel der Erkenntniskritik durch Descartes und Platon zu zeigen, dass diese Auseinandersetzung dennoch lohnend ist, ist das Ziel dieses Buches.
