Urological applications of neuromodulation and neurostimulation are among the most evolving fields for these technologies. First approved for management of refractory urge incontinence, different modalities of neuromodulation and stimulation have been tested, applied and verified for a vast spectrum of voiding and pelvic floor dysfunction disorders. The modalities of delivering this treatment have also evolved in the last three decades, with a focus on sacral neuromodulation. The experimental and established ,Äúoff-label,Äù applications of neuromodulation have also encompassed chronic pelvic pain disorders, including chronic prostatitis and bladder pain syndrome, among others. In this chapter, we discuss all the hypothesized theories suggested on how this technology provides therapeutic potential for a number of chronic and debilitating urological conditions, the modes of delivery be it anterior, sacral, and posterior tibial to name a few, and the evolving and future applications.

New Perspectives In Sacral Nerve Stimulation written by Udo Jonas and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-03-28 with Medical categories.

This textbook describes sacral nerve stimulation and the role it plays in restoring lower urinary tract function. The reader will become familiar with the specific anatomy, the principles of neurostimulation and neuromodulation and patient selection. The authors also share the results obtained during the last two decades using this "high-tech" surgical procedure. Though not first-line therapy, sacral nerve stimulation is indicated for those patients who have failed to see success from conservative treatment in the problems of voiding and storage. New Perspectives in Sacral Nerve Stimulation is the first comprehensive overview of this exciting, intriguing field.

Functional urology is that part of urological practice which deals with functional disorders of the lower urinary tract. Among the diseases that cause functional disorders are spina bifida, spinal cord injury, pelvic organ prolapse, and urethral strictures. This book on practical functional urology will help urologists, urogynecologists, and others to diagnose and treat these functional disorders. The theoretical background and scientific basis are summarized, but the emphasis is very much on clinical practice. Diagnosis and treatment are presented for a variety of conditions, including overactive bladder, detrusor underactivity, painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis, prostatitis, stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary tract infections, and urethral disorders. The content is based on the EAU guidelines, and for each disorder, helpful tips and tricks are highlighted.

Neuro-Urology Research: A Comprehensive Overview describes the current status of the neuro-urology field including the latest discoveries, explains in detail some of the neuroscience tools that can be used when studying the neural control of the lower urinary tract, and discusses potential future directions for research. The first section, Neuroscience in Urology Research, reviews neuro-regulators and the important anatomical brain sites. It also provides an overview of voluntary versus reflex micturition control and describes how bladder physiology readout is a useful tool in research. The second section, Fundamental and Translational Neuro-Urology Research, discusses the translational potential of basic research for patients and the impact of neuro-urology research on clinical practice. Chapters in this section provide more insight into pathologies endemic to specific patient populations and areas for treatment development opportunities. The third section, Neurobiological Tools Applied to Neuro-Urology Research, supplements the ‘A Quick Guide to the "Neuroscience Toolbox"’ and introduces research techniques such as RNA sequencing and calcium imaging of neural activity. The fourth and final section, aptly titled Research Directions and Research Opportunities, covers research directions that remain underexplored or have high therapeutic potential. Research in neuro-urology presents a route to understanding how bladder function is controlled and how urinary continence is maintained. This book provides a platform for researchers to initiate collaborations on the many underexplored research topics and to consolidate knowledge, ultimately lending itself to a coordinated and multi-center research approach that will benefit the field. Presents a comprehensive overview of research studies in the field of neuro-urology Discusses approaches to conducting neuro-urology research, including models of lower urinary tract dysfunction and methods of tracking bladder physiology Proposes areas of research opportunity that, if explored, could yield effective treatment options for those affected by lower urinary tract disorders Includes an introductory guide to useful research tools and the "Neuroscience Toolbox", as well as chapters specifically about RNA sequencing techniques and imaging bladder-associated neural circuits

Stimulation Of The Peripheral Nervous System written by K.V. Slavin and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-09 with Medical categories.

Among neuromodulation procedures, electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves (PNS) is probably the most underappreciated modality. Although PNS is used for all kinds of medical conditions, ranging from chronic neuropathic pain and headache to epilepsy, depression, hypertension and heart failure, its importance is frequently overshadowed by spinal cord stimulation and deep brain stimulation. While the earlier version of this book dealt exclusively with various pain syndromes, this new volume covers the entire spectrum of PNS applications. Written by recognized authorities in their respective fields, the chapters of this title describe the use of PNS in the management of neurological, psychiatric, otorhinolaryngological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, colorectal and genitourinary disorders. To reflect the complexity of the regulatory process, the book ends with a special chapter dedicated to the current state of approval of different PNS devices. This book will be of great value to all those who deal with neuromodulation, including clinicians who select PNS candidates, surgeons and other specialists who implant PNS devices, and researchers and engineers who work on making the stimulators safer and more effective.
