Neutron capture therapy (NCT) is based on the ability of the non-radioactive isotope boron-10 to capture thermal neutrons with very high probability and immediately to release heavy particles with a path length of one cell diameter, which in principle allows for tumor cell-selective high-LET particle radiotherapy. This book provides a comprehensive summary of the progress made in NCT in recent years. Individual sections cover all important aspects, including neutron sources, boron chemistry, drugs for NCT, dosimetry, and radiation biology. The use of NCT in a variety of malignancies and also some non-malignant diseases is extensively discussed. NCT is clearly shown to be a promising modality at the threshold of wider clinical application. All of the chapters are written by experienced specialists in language that will be readily understood by all participating disciplines.

The Physics And Radiobiology Of Fast Neutron Beams written by David K. Bewley and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-10-01 with Medical categories.

Over fifty years have passed since the first patient was treated with fast neutrons, but this form of therapy is still a matter of bitter dispute. Neutron generators have been installed in many countries and now patients can be treated with equipment that is technically similar to modern megavoltage x-ray equipment. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams presents a full discussion of the physical and radiobiological factors governing the production and use of fast neutron beams for therapy. The book discusses vastly improved neutron generators, advances in the standardization of dosimetric methods, and the specification of radiation quality. In addition, it explores nuclear methods of analysis, particularly neutron activation analysis in vivo. Influencing the place of radiotherapy with neutrons and other heavy particles, the radiobiological factors governing the treatment of cancer with radiation are examined. The author also studies the radiation hazard of neutrons, a matter of importance in the use of neutrons for chemical analysis in vivo. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams will be a valuable introduction to the subject for radiotherapists, medical physicists, radiographers, and radiobiologists new to the field. The book is also a useful summary of current knowledge for those already established in the use of fast neutrons for medical purposes.

Frontiers in Neutron Capture Therapy contains current research results originally presented at the Eighth International Symposium on Neutron Capture Therapy for Cancer in La Jolla, CA. This comprehensive collection of peer-reviewed manuscripts is showcased in two volumes covering all aspects of the development of this multidisciplinary approach to cancer therapy. Volume I of this work includes clinical results and current progress in treatment planning, neutron sources and dosimetry, while Volume II presents the synthesis, pharmacology and tissue-targeting design of boron compounds, including work on preclinical dosimetry and radiobiology. Intended for researchers and clinicians involved with or interested in new modes of cancer therapy, this volume will also serve as a useful guideline for scientists, students, and practitioners in the field.

Advances in Radiation Biology comprises nine chapters, the first of which focuses on the aspects of OER and RBE relevant to neutron therapy. It discusses early studies, the rationale for fast neutron therapy, the oxygen effect, repair after X-rays and neutrons, and RBE for normal tissues. Chapter 2 focuses on the present status of the proposed use of negative pi mesons in radiotherapy. It discusses the pion proposal, single-cell survival, somatic-cell mutagenesis studies, multicellular tumor spheroid studies, and normal versus tumor tissue responses in the laboratory and in the clinic. Chapter...

The ninth annual multidisciplinary symposium on clinical oncology organized by the Royal College of Radiologists was jointly arranged with the International Society for Radiation Oncology. It was held in London in February 1987 and discussed the biological and clinical basis of the effects of radiotherapy. Wherever possible lectures by an experimental scientist were paired with those of a clinical scientist in order to emphasize clinical relevance. It is hoped that this has resulted in a widely balanced view of the subject. The volume presents an updated version of these subjects based on those talks. After surgery, radiotherapy is the main treatment used in the management of patients with cancer. Its empirical success when first introduced is now backed up by a wealth of laboratory, clinical and experimental experience. New techniques for adminis tering the conventional X-ray therapy have been supplemented by methods which can be used to modify the radiation response. These include changes in dose rate or fractionation, and combined modality treatments including sensitization by drugs or heat. Other types of radiation, such as neutrons and other particles, are also now available which have enhanced physical and biological advantages.
