Excerpt from The New American Citizen a Reader for Foreigners To find suitable reading matter for adult foreign pupils in evening schools has always been difficult. The ordinary first and second readers used in day schools, which are mostly intended for children, contain as a rule little material of a kind to interest older persons. Either the ideas themselves are juvenile or the vocabulary not the most suitable to the needs of grown-up pupils. The purpose of the author has been to prepare a series of reading lessons suitable for adult learners and which should have patriotism as their keynote. Love of country is an almost universal sentiment, and one that appeals strongly to the class of pupils who make up the attendance in our evening schools for foreigners. Citizen written by Claudia Rankine and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-02 with Poetry categories.

WINNER OF THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE FOR POETRY WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR POETRY In this moving, critical and fiercely intelligent collection of prose poems, Claudia Rankine examines the experience of race and racism in Western society through sharp vignettes of everyday discrimination and prejudice, and longer meditations on the violence - whether linguistic or physical - which has impacted the lives of Serena Williams, Zinedine Zidane, Mark Duggan and others. Awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry in America after becoming the first book in the prize's history to be a finalist in both the poetry and criticism categories, Citizen weaves essays, images and poetry together to form a powerful testament to the individual and collective effects of racism in an ostensibly "post-race" society.

Excerpt from A First Reader for New American Citizens: Conversational and Reading Lessons Great care should be taken by the teacher to enun ciate very clearly and distinctly. The pupil should be taught to watch the motion of the teacher's lips. The material selected in the first lessons is such as can be taught objectively, but as the pupil ad vances and masters the language the need for the Objective work diminishes. More abstract ideas are then introduced: lessons on the care of the body, care of the home, foods, and clothes; lessons that will accustom a foreigner to American ways and manners, in business and in society. Citizens Power In Latin America written by Pascal Lupien and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-01 with Political Science categories.

Examines why some democratic innovations succeed while others fail, using Venezuela, Ecuador, and Chile as case studies. Citizens’ Power in Latin America takes the reader into the heart of communities where average citizens are attempting to build a new democratic model to improve their socioeconomic conditions and to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives. Based on groundbreaking fieldwork conducted in Venezuela, Ecuador, and Chile, Pascal Lupien contrasts two models of participatory design that have emerged in Latin America and identifies the factors that enhance or diminish the capacity of these mechanisms to produce positive outcomes. He draws on lived experiences of citizen participants to reveal the potential and the dangers of participatory democracy. Why do some democratic innovations appear to succeed while others fail? To what extent do these institutions really empower citizens, and in what ways can they be used by governments to control participation? What lessons can be learned from these experiments? Given the growing dissatisfaction with existing democratic systems across the world, this book will be of interest to people seeking innovative ways of deepening democracy.
