Excerpt from New England Wild Flowers and Their Seasons The kindly reception given my Among Rhode Island Wild Flowers has led me, perhaps too rashly, to venture once more afield. In enlarging the scope of the work to include New England, my purpose has never been to mention all, or even a large part, of the owers of this region. I have collected, rather, the notes of many wander ings by hill and dale, on the sea-shore, or on the mountains, and these stand very much as originally written. It is hoped that they will thus seem fresher and more life-like than if worked up anew. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Harper's Guide to Wild Flowers This book explains the easiest way Of telling owers and plants. These ways are based upon the new Classification. This Classification is the one presented in the seventh edi tion Of Gray's Manual of Botany, published in 1908. It em bodies the decisions Of the Vienna Congress Of 1905. The Congress came to an agreement respecting the botanical names and Classifications Of American owers, which we hope will not need to be revised. Some Old names, dear to us, have Come back. Greater simplicity as well as perma nency has been aimed for. The first way Of telling owers is by color. It is the simplest means Of identification, and to this the most space is given. Secondly, owers may be identified by their dwelling places or habitats. Thirdly, owers are shown by seasons, the time and order Of their blossoms. This book is a Guide to the owering plants Of the Atlantic seaboard, New England, the Middle States, and, to a limited extent, Of the Southern States. It is interest ing to note the wide latitudinal range Of some plants along the entire Atlantic coast. As the climate grows warmer, plants ascend the mountains, and New Eng land vegetation reappears two thousand feet high in Vir ginia. Plants which are local, and but seldom found, the size Of this book excludes. Plant immigrants, unless well established, are not enumerated. Taking New York as the center of a wide circle, any per son possessing no knowledge Of botany (except such as may be acquired from the Explanation Of Technical Terms) may identify any ower and learn something Of its story. There is every reason to believe that there is need Of a book complete in its means of identification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Our Early Wild Flowers: A Study of the Herbaceous Plants Becoming in Early Spring in the Northern States Spring greatly in uences the opening of the owers; but really this in uence is much less than one might think it would be; the spring owers are very much like the spring birds, they appear when they are due with very little regard to the immediate weather; they obey the summons of the sun. They may not come so abundantly, but they come on time. By April 20, in the Middle West, the earliest owers are past and the full ora well under way. In New England the season is later. Excerpt from Wreath of Wild Flowers: From New England With faltering hand and fearful soul, As in the Orient's sunny clime, The maiden trims her fragrant lamp, A tiny, faint, but Love-fed spark, And trembling gives to doubtful waves, Illumed and wreathed, her fairy bark. My simple flowers! A heaven of Love Was o'er ye when ye budded first, And Love pronounced the blossoms fair, His own fond smiles and tears had nursed. Excerpt from The Birds and Seasons: New England Mr. Burroughs is confessedly the most graphic and entertaining of our authors on Ornithology. I regret that I had not seen his book, "Wake Robin," before this volume was in type, as the perusal of it would have improved my own pages. I would remind the reader that some parts of my book have previously appeared in print. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
