"Over the past 25 years, previously separate fields of linguistic research have moved closer together, resulting in constructive collaborations. Cognitive Sociolinguistics draws on the framework of Cognitive Linguistics to investigate social factors in linguistic variation. Linguistic Landscape studies merge Semiotics and Sociolinguistics. Critical Discourse Studies link ideological dimensions of language to general conceptual principles. Language pedagogy is constantly informed by developments in Applied Linguistics. Furthermore, there is lively communication with neighbouring disciplines such as Literary and Cultural Studies. The present volume reflects this fruitful fluidity. It is a tribute to the linguist Martin Pütz, whose work has always been guided by this interdisciplinary spirit"--

Languages And Social Cohesion written by Gabriela Meier and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-29 with Social Science categories.

A critical and systematic review of existing research located at the crossroads of sociology, social psychology and applied linguistics, Languages and Social Cohesion offers valuable insights for social contexts in which decision makers and researchers grapple with questions of social cohesion in the presence of linguistic diversity. Based on a thematic analysis of 285 studies from 50 countries (references available), this book emphasises the crucial role languages play in understanding social cohesion and provides a framework of perspectives to aid exploration of these complex interlinkages. Through interpreting the literature, the authors establish language repertoires as tools that facilitate social networks and access to resources. Furthermore, language norms and allegiances can subjectively shape the way groups use their language resources, which can result in social inclusion, exclusion and mediation between language groups. Education in particular is highlighted as a policy tool that implements linguistic decisions and norms, and steers status, hierarchies and distribution of languages in society. The theory-informed and accessible tools featured can be used to guide and inform further research, workshops or projects that investigate social cohesion and languages. This book is relevant to diverse and intersecting spheres of influence, such as groups, communities, institutions and authorities at local, regional, national and international levels.

Identity Issues written by Vesna Lopičić and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-12 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The book Identity Issues: Literary and Linguistic Landscapes is a collection of essays, set out to explore the notion of identity as a constantly relevant, very complex, multi-faceted phenomenon. Understanding identity in a very broad sense, the authors approach it from various angles, highlighting its various aspects. The first section includes literary explorations that discuss identity issues of class, race, nation and history, as depicted in several works of, mostly, contemporary Anglo-American literature. The second section brings various linguistic studies of identity, starting with the usual sociolinguistic issues, but also including a range of other research routes, which draw upon insights from psychology, sociology, historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, lexicology, functional grammar, and applied linguistics. The book addresses a broad academic audience. Due to its wide scope, both in topics covered and in varied theoretical approaches, it is not only aimed towards literary scholars studying modern Anglo-American literature, nor only at sociolinguists interested in language identity, but at numerous academics, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, who are interested in some of the disciplines that provided the framework for various articles (literary studies, sociology, cognitive linguistics, lexicology, functional grammar, academic writing, and English teaching). The book would be particularly appealing to all those who are interested in examining a variety of identity issues from diverse angles. The authors of the articles come from Serbia, the UK, Canada, Japan, Norway, and Romania.

Futures For English Studies written by Ann Hewings and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-12 with Education categories.

Futures for English Studies brings together chapters by leading writers across the curriculum area of English to investigate how the component parts of English (literature, language, and creative writing) are located institutionally in higher education and to explore the interdisciplinary prospects of a subject which spans the humanities and social sciences. Through explorations of changing foci in a variety of contexts, the book examines the value and purpose of teaching and researching English language, literature and creative writing in the twenty-first century, both within Anglophone countries and the wider world. The contributors, all practicing educators and researchers in the field, bring a wide range of perspectives to the theme of the development of the discipline, and illustrate that the strengths of English Studies as an academic subject lie not only in its traditional breadth and depth, but also in a readiness to adapt, experiment, and engage with other subjects.

The Language and Literature Reader is an invaluable resource for students of English literature, language, and linguistics. Bringing together the most significant work in the field with integrated editorial material, this Reader is a structured and accessible tool for the student and scholar. Divided into three sections, Foundations, Developments and New Directions, the Reader provides an overview of the discipline from the early stages in the 1960s and 70s, through the new theories and practices of the 1980s and 90s, to the most recent and contemporary work in the field. Each article contains a brief introduction by the editors situating it in the context of developing work in the discipline and glossing it in terms of the section and of the book as a whole. The final section concludes with a ‘history and manifesto’, written by the editors, which places developments in the area of stylistics within a brief history of the field and offers a polemical perspective on the future of a growing and influential discipline.
