'The first of my father's illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels.' So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the myriad strange and wonderful times encountered by the family Berry. Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they 'dream on' in this funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel.

Across Massachusetts, roadsides are dotted with small stone markers giving the mileage to major cities. These ancient road signs called milestones aided travelers during the 1700’s and 1800’s as our road signs today do with their mileage and destination information. Although, these old milestones no longer serve a useful purpose in our modern age of highways, they continue to fascinate us. This fascination has led to the preservation by local communities of at least 129 milestones in Massachusetts and a number of milestones in New Hampshire. Milestones were for the most part commissioned by private citizens and made by local or itinerant stone carvers. With the exception of the turnpike milestones, no two milestones are alike. There are differences in the type of stone chosen, the wording, and the lettering styles of individual carvers. These differences give the milestones personality and character. This sense of character is one of the endearing aspects of these humble road signs that continues to draw us to them. Although some of the milestones like those around Boston and those along the famous Upper Post Road are well known, many are not. The authors have spent a number of years combing through old books and newspapers and traveling through the state in search of these local historical treasures. This book draws together all of their research in an effort to provide a comprehensive inventory of Massachusetts milestones. In addition, it includes milestones the authors have found in their travels through southeastern New Hampshire.

The Granite State written by Ronald Jager and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Industries categories.

"New Hampshire is a small state, heavy with history". Such is the modest beginning of a narrative which is a masterpiece of concision. Accomplishing the nearly impossible, Ronald and Grace Jager have distilled more than three and a half centuries of history into a concentrated, yet refreshing essence. Taking as their subject the whole of New Hampshire's development, from the days of the Penacooks to our own, the finished product is far more than a mere condensation of historical data. The authors have captured the character and substance of New Hampshire's people, not just their deeds, with thematic threads that weave together the experience of generations. Authoritative and still highly personal, the story falls into four parts which, the authors explain, "best accommodate the historical experience of the state: " these are natural, political, economic, and cultural history. They maintain that "the strength of the state, the source of its surprising coherence, may be simply its history -- long, complicated, densely-packed, and very much present". Few, after reading this compelling narrative, will be able to look at any corner of the state without reflecting on its past. The fifth part of the book is unique in its own way, presenting the histories of many of New Hampshire's leading businesses and organizations, in a special chapter entitled "Chronicles of Leadership". An illustrated timeline of significant events in New Hampshire's history further enhances the text. In fascinating complement to the manuscript are more than 300 half-tone and color photographs, selected from thousands and representing every area of the state. Long-vanished scenes of rural and urban New Hampshirecompete for attention with stunning color reproductions of artwork, antiques, and costumes; picture-postcard vistas of today; dignified portraits of the great; and evocative glimpses into the peoples' everyday lives. Together with the text they form a sort of mosaic, very much like their subject: compact, rich with color, and of a most pleasing design.
