""With upright and benevolent men as Indian Agents; with the friendly influence of the Indian Department fostering education and favoring missionary labors..., surely there is new hope for this people!" With this sanguine declaration, the Presbyterian church in 1870 endorsed a novel approach to civilizing and Christianizing Indians. This new concept, labeled the Grant Peace Policy for the president who initiated it, was a direct response to demands for reform in the Indian service following the Civil War. Reacting to these pressures, the administration agreed to a partnership of church and state by which churches nominated Christian laymen for positions as Indian agents and, whenever possible, assigned missionaries to preach and teach at Indian agencies. In this history of one of the government's first concerted attempts to solve the "Indian problem," Bender perceptively interprets the successes, and lack thereof, of agents and Presbyterian missionaries with Navajos, army officers, government officials, church leaders, and congressmen"--Back cover.

Tears of Repentance revisits and reexamines the familiar stories of intercultural encounters between Protestant missionaries and Native peoples in southern New England from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Focusing on Protestant missionaries' accounts of their ideals, purposes, and goals among the Native communities they served and of the religion as lived, experienced, and practiced among Christianized Indians, Julius H. Rubin offers a new way of understanding the motives and motivations of those who lived in New England's early Christianized Indian village communities. Rubin explores how Christian Indians recast Protestant theology into an Indianized quest for salvation from their worldly troubles and toward the promise of an otherworldly paradise. The Great Awakening of the eighteenth century reveals how evangelical pietism transformed religious identities and communities and gave rise to the sublime hope that New Born Indians were children of God who might effectively contest colonialism. With this dream unfulfilled, the exodus from New England to Brothertown envisioned a separatist Christian Indian commonwealth on the borderlands of America after the Revolution. Tears of Repentance is an important contribution to American colonial and Native American history, offering new ways of examining how Native groups and individuals recast Protestant theology to restore their Native communities and cultures.

Thousands of years ago Native American Indians lived along the Delaware River in what is now New Hope, Pennsylvania. William Penn arrived from England in 1682, and helped to build a community for his fellow Quakers. Later, General George Washington and his army marched along Old York Road through the center of New Hope and crossed the Delaware River nearby. In the 19th century, mules pulled canal boats along the Delaware Canal to carry food and materials to help build our young country. In the 1920s many artists came to New Hope to paint the beautiful landscapes in the area, and later the Bucks County Playhouse brought Broadway and Hollywood stars to town. Today, all of these wonderful events are still celebrated in New Hope where shops, theaters, restaurants, museums, parks and ice cream parlors all add to the fun of visiting this historic Bucks County town.

Thomas Varker Keam owned and operated a trading post in Keams Canyon, Arizona Territory, from 1874 to 1902. He was the first trader to develop American Indian arts and crafts as part of his business and the first to suggest that Native artists modify their techniques to increase sales. Keam had a major impact on the evolution of Hopi pottery. Involved in early archaeological work in the Southwest, Keam was the first trader to develop lucrative contacts with museum curators and anthropologists. He sold enormous collections to the Smithsonian Institution, the Field Museum, and the Peabody Museum, as well as several European institutions. An advocate for the Indians, Keam represented the Hopis and Navajos in confrontations with the U.S. government over “civilizing” programs between 1869 and 1902, when the Indians tried to maintain their political and cultural independence. Thomas Varker Keam revised Indian trading so that he and American Indian artists profited.
