Going beyond current readings of Concretism and Neoconcretism, this book shows how these movements were bred in the Brazilian circuit, after adapting international constructivism to the cultural conditions of the country. Thus, based on a systematic investigation in the archives of newspapers of that period, this book explores the premises through which Neoconcretism became organized and gained momentum in a series of debates between the avant-gardes of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro—debates that focused on the visual arts and poetry as objects of intense aesthetic experimentation and prospective transformation. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to certify the presence of prose lyricism in Brazilian novels, explaining its operation in lyrical novels. Besides the examination of a selection of prose fiction works and writers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the thesis also inquires about the absence of the subject in Brazilian literary studies, exposing the origin of a prejudice against lyrical narratives and refuting this negative preconception. This work bridges this gap and brings to light some of the implications of this absence, regarding Brazilian literary studies. In doing so, it also aims to contribute to the lyrical novel theory, adding to its premises recent and flexible configurations in the theory of the genres. Chapter 1 analyses the changing nature of the concepts of novel and lyricism, while it contributes to achieve an updated perception of the lyrical novel. These variations are compared in order to obtain a theoretical standpoint from which to assess Brazilian literary works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Chapter 2 examines the historical provenance of the merger between lyricism and sentimentalism/escapism, one consequence of which has been the disparagement undergone by prose lyricism in Brazil up to the present. Chapter 3 offers an overview of canonical and non-canonical authors who work with prose lyricism - its main objectives are to do justice to this historical inquiry and to open new perspectives for research into these writers. The concluding Chapter 4 focuses on contemporary writing in Brazil. This examination is made in contrast with the current status of realism in Brazilian literature, questioning recent literary representations. Three lyrical novelists are taken as case studies, expanding the parameters obtained throughout the thesis.

When Brazil was honored at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2013, the Brazilian author Luiz Ruffato opened the event with a provocative speech, claiming that literature, through its pervasive depiction and discussion of ‘otherness,’ has the potential to provoke ethical transformation. This book uses Ruffato’s speech as a starting point for the discussion of contemporary Brazilian literature that stands in contrast to the repetition of social and cultural clichés. By illuminating the relevance of humanities and literature as a catalyst for rethinking Brazil, the book offers a resistance to the official discourses that have worked for so long to conceal social tensions, injustices, and secular inequities in Brazilian society. In doing so, it situates Brazilian literature away from the exotic and peripheral spectrum, and closer to a universal and more relevant ethical discussion for readers from all parts of the world. This is an extraordinarily imaginative attempt to analyze the relations between literature and technique in Brazil from the 1880s to the 1920s. The author suggests that in these relations we can see more clearly the shape of a period that is otherwise usually defined from a literary perspective as pre- or post- something or other, rather than in terms of its own characteristics. One such characteristic is the intense interaction with the new technologies then arising in Brazil, the beginning of the professionalization of writers, and a revision of the concept of literature, redefined as technique. The authors chief concern is to determine what is distinctive about the literary production of the period. Rather than focusing on literatures relations with visual art, with a rising social class, or with the sociopolitical divisions within the educated classes of Brazilian society, the author examines the crônica (a kind of journalistic essay), poetry, and fiction of these decades in terms of their encounter with a burgeoning technological and industrial landscape. This encounter is examined from two perspectives. The first is explicit representation: the portrayal in Brazilian literature of modern artifacts, new means of transformation and communication, and the newborn industries of advertising and commercial publication. The second perspective examines how these close contacts with the technological world came to shape cultural productionthat is, not how literature represents technique, but how literary technique changed as it incorporated procedures characteristic of photography, film, and poster art. This transformation was consistent and concurrent with significant changes taking place in the perceptions and sensibilities of the population of major Brazilian cities, a population increasingly attuned to images, the instant, and technology as all-powerful mediators of the urban landscape, time, and a subjectivity constantly under the threat of extinction.

In this first book-length study to compare the "new novels" of both Spanish America and Brazil, the authors deftly examine the differing perceptions of ambiguity as they apply to questions of gender and the participation of females and males in the establishment of Latin American narrative models. Their daring thesis: the Brazilian new novel developed a more radical form than its better-known Spanish-speaking cousin because it had a significantly different approach to the crucial issues of ambiguity and gender and because so many of its major practitioners were women. As a wise strategy for assessing the canonical new novels from Latin America, the coupling of ambiguity and gender enables Payne and Fitz to discuss how borders--literary, generic, and cultural--are maintained, challenged, or crossed. Their conclusions illuminate the contributions of the new novel in terms of experimental structures and narrative techniques as well as the significant roles of voice, theme, and language.
