Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Excerpt from Physical Geography: Prepared on a New and Original Plan Geology is the ancient history of the earth. It is the science which determines the chronological succession of the great forma tions of the earth's crust, and investigates the causes of its present surface features; it further treats of the materials composing the earth's substance, and of the development of life upon our globe as recorded in its rocky framework. Excerpt from A Geography of New State: Physical and Descriptive I know of no other region whose physiography is so inter esting as that embraced in New York and the New England States, and I have therefore dwelt much on its physical geography, past and present. Inasmuch as the state owes its commercial supremacy mainly to certain of these physio graphic features, I think it well to impress their importance upon the attention of the student. Excerpt from New Geography, Vol. 2 Every boy and every girl in this country has an opportunity to rise to a position of great responsibility. The schools are open to all, and everyone who is able and, willing to work hard may have the advantages of the highest and best education. Each one will have the responsibility of citizenship in a great nation. To fulfill the responsibility of citizenship, to help the home community, the state, and the nation, each one of us should understand the geography of this country; and at this time, when the United States of America is taking a larger and larger part in affairs of world-wide importance, it is more necessary than ever before that We know also the geography of other countries. Variety in physical and human geography. Some parts of the United States are warm and other parts are cold; some are well watered and forested, others have a moderate rainfall and are grasslands; and still others are very dry. In some sections of the country there are plains, in some parts there are plateaus, and in other parts there are mountains. See map opposite page 82. Vast areas of rich soils. Have led to farming, and the extensive grasslands have invited many to raise cattle, horses, and sheep. The wonderful supplies of coal, oil, gas, and water-power', together with iron, copper, lead, and zinc, have made possible a most re markable industrial development. People living on the coast, where there are good harbors, have very natu rally become interested in commerce, and throughout the land many are engaged in trade and transportation. Because the physical geography differs so widely in the many sections, the human geography varies also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography In the preparation of the book, effort has been made to introduce new material, particularly in the illustrations, which are a prominent part of the book. Also, there has been an endeavor to make the book scientifically accurate, and to introduce the latest knowledge on the subjects treated. There are probably places in which this is not done, for the field is so large that much must be compilation; and the compiler is liable to fall into error.
