This collection of essays, largely written by members of the Oxford theological community, was presented to John Ashton on his 65th birthday in 1996. The essays deal with Elijah in Mark, a Q passion narrative, the Gospel thief saying, John's Beloved Disciple, the temple incident (Jn 2.13-25) and history and theology. Outside of the Gospels, they discuss God's wrath in Romans 1, Philippians 1.1-11, Hebrews 4.13, Peter and Paul behind Revelation, and hermeneutical method. Specialists from outside the New Testament field contribute studies of the patristic doctrine of Scripture, the Syriac Diatessaron, William Tyndale, the theology of the resurrection and the Byzantine understanding of John. John Ashton was, before his retirement, Lecturer in New Testament and Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford.

The Old Is Better written by Robert H. Gundry and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-01 with Religion categories.

Current study of the New Testament features many new interpretations. Robert Gundry's book finds them largely wanting and defends traditional ones. Several of its essays have never been published before. Most of the rest, though previously published, have been updated and otherwise revised, sometimes heavily. The studies cover a wide variety of topics in New Testament study, ranging from the Gospels to Revelation and much in between, as for example theological diversity, symbiosis between theology and genre criticism, pre-Papian tradition concerning Mark and Matthew as apostolically Johannine, and mishnaic jurisprudence as compatible with Jesus' blasphemy. In its entirety, this collection of essays shows the weaknesses of many novel interpretations of the New Testament as well as the essential reliability of earliest traditions concerning the New Testament, and the essential reliability of New Testament traditions themselves.

The editors of this book contend that one of the world's best-known and most influential bodies of literature is one of the least understood. This is due both to the proliferation of modern hermeneutical approaches and to the lack of understanding of the historical backgrounds of the New Testament. In their sequel to their earlier work, New Testament Criticism and Interpretation, Black and Dockery present essays on current issues and methods with the purpose of enhancing New Testament interpretation, teaching, and preaching, and providing a useful means of learning what the New Testament is all about.

The collection of essays focuses on the twin areas of research undertaken by Prof. Michael W. Holmes. These are the sub-disciplines of textual criticism and the study of the Apostolic Fathers. The first part of the volume on textual criticism focuses on issues of method, the praxis of editing and collating texts, and discussions pertaining to individual variants. The second part of the volume assembles essays on the Apostolic Fathers. There is a particular focus on the person and writings of Polycarp, since this is the area of research where Prof. Holmes has worked most intensively.

On Romans written by C. E. B. Cranfield and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-11-01 with Religion categories.

Professor Charles Cranfield takes a fresh look at some important questions currently in debate. Several of these essays are previously unpublished.Subjects include, for example, what Paul meant by "the works of law;" whether his meaning in the words "pistis Christou" was "faith in Christ" or "Christ's faith;" whether the old Testament law has a continuing place in the life of the Christian church. In "Sanctification as Freedom," the author attempts to draw out the significance of the apostle's affirmation that the law of the Spirit has freed the believer from the law of sin and of death.Cranfield does not lose sight of the relevance of theology, and of New Testament studies in particular, to the life of the Church and of the Christian individual today.
