This is a book for teachers, by teachers, from elementary school to university level classrooms. It is about the use of creative instructional strategies in K-12 classroom settings, and the transformations the teachers made in their journeys from being traditional practitioners to “becoming pedagogical” in their approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum. Over twenty teachers conducted research in their classrooms on the implementation of creative strategies, tactics, graphics organizers, and visual journals in teaching and learning. They have written their inquiries in a narrative style, informed by various forms of arts based educational research. Their research is approachable and usable by other teachers who are interested in becoming reflective-reflexive practitioners. Many of the strategies, tactics, and graphics organizers are described by Barrie Bennett in his widely used textbook, Beyond Monet: The Artful Science of Instructional Intelligence. However, through their journeys of becoming teacher-learner-researchers, many discovered numerous, creative variations of Bennett’s work as it was implemented in their classrooms. While there are many professional books that provide ideas on collaborative learning and creative teaching approaches, there is very little published research on the efficacy of these concepts in the K-12 classroom. These inquiries provide practical insights into how inspired teachers can conduct research on improving their own practice as well as on greatly improving their students’ learning. Thus, this book has widespread interest for teachers and administrators who seek to implement systemic changes in the ways that teachers teach, and children learn, in the 21st century.

In the 1970s, a stylistic shift emerged within contemporary Western classical music composition to counteract the Modernist aesthetic practiced by the post-Webern generation. This New Tonality aesthetic (originally called New Romanticism) asserts the rights of composers to choose from all musical styles and techniques, including a reinvention of tonality in the wake of Modernism, and advocates a return to expression, emotion, communication and accessibility. This book examines the development and characteristics of New Tonality, as well as research and composers' comments on the style. The book also examines two New Tonal works - James Hopkins' Songs of Eternity, and Paul Moravec's Songs of Love and War - and considers the musical elements and compositional techniques that place them within the style. Finally, After Death: Poems by Edgar Allan Poe, an original New Tonal work composed by the author, is presented and discussed. This work represents the author's reflection and interpretation of the historical and contemporary influences currently at work in Western classical music, as well as his view of what it means to compose serious art music in the early twenty-first century.

Twelve Tone Tonality Second Edition written by George Perle and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-07-23 with Music categories.

The challenge, in twentieth-century music, to the normative status of triadic tonality is one of the most far-reaching and extreme revolutions that the history of music has known. In his classic work, Twelve-Tone Tonality, George Perle argues that the seemingly disparate styles of post-triadic music in fact share common structural elements. According to Perle, these elements collectively imply a new tonality as "natural" and coherent as the major-minor tonality that was the basis of a common musical language in the past. His book describes the foundational assumptions of this post-diatonic tonality and illustrates its compositional functions with numerous musical examples. The second edition of Twelve-Tone Tonality is enlarged by eleven new chapters. Some of these are "postscripts" to earlier chapters, clarifying, elucidating, and expanding upon concepts discussed in the original edition. Others discuss new developments in the theory and practice of twelve-tone tonality, including voice-leading implications of the system and dissonance treatment. Errors discovered in the original edition have been corrected. - Jacket flap.

Composition Chromaticism And The Developmental Process written by Henry Burnett and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Music categories.

Musicology, having been transmitted as a compilation of disparate events and disciplines, has long necessitated a 'magic bullet', a 'unified field theory' so to speak, that can interpret the steady metamorphosis of Western art music from late medieval modality to twentieth-century atonality within a single theoretical construct. Without that magic bullet, discussions of this kind are increasingly complicated and, to make matters worse, the validity of any transformational models and ideas of the natural evolution of styles is questioned and even frowned upon today as epitomizing a grotesque teleological bigotry. Going against current thinking, Henry Burnett and Roy Nitzberg claim that the teleological approach to observing stylistic change is still valid when considered from the purely compositional perspective. The authors challenge the traditional understanding of development, and advance a new theory of eleven-pitch tonality as it relates to the corpus of Western composition. The book plots the evolution of tonality and its bearing on style and the compositional process itself. The theory is not based on the diatonic aspect of the various tonal systems exploited by composers; rather, the theory is chromatically based - the chromatically inflected octave being the source not only of a highly ingenious developmental dialectic, but also encompassing the moment-to-moment progression of the musical narrative itself. Even the most profound teachings of Schenker, and the often startlingly original and worthwhile speculations of Riemann, Tovey, Dahlhaus and others, still provide no theory of development and so are ultimately unable to unite the various tendrils of the compositional organism into a unified whole. Burnett and Nitzberg move beyond existing theory and analysis to base their theory from the standpoint of chromatic 'pitch fields'. These fields are the specific chromatic pitch choices that a composer uses to inform and design a complete composition, utilizing

Twelve-Tone Tonality: Expanded Diatonicism - Dr. Joseph Krush presents new Dodecaphonic Tonal sets and leads readers through Expanded Diatonicism, Nonaphonic and Decaphonic Bi-modality, culminating with "The World's Best Dodecaphonic Tonal Set." He illustrates Semi-Modulation through Rotating Quintcircles. Relative Compatibility of Keys and Chromatic Clashes of Tones are also explored. Composers will benefit from this groundbreaking new system. Krush addresses the question: "What kind of a tonal system would result if the major and minor modes were combined into one, fused major/minor key?" His ultimate answer is: "Uni-tonal Nonaphonic Bi-Modality." Covering topics including Nonaphonic, Tri-Tonal, Bi-Modal Systems, Hendecaphonic and Dodecaphonic Systems, and Dodecaphonic Tonality and Functionality, the book is divided into two parts and spans 25 chapters.

Tonality And Transformation written by Steven Rings and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-10 with Music categories.

Tonality and Transformation is a groundbreaking study in the analysis of tonal music. Focusing on the listener's experience, author Steven Rings employs transformational music theory to illuminate diverse aspects of tonal hearing - from the infusion of sounding pitches with familiar tonal qualities to sensations of directedness and attraction. In the process, Rings introduces a host of new analytical techniques for the study of the tonal repertory, demonstrating their application in vivid interpretive set pieces on music from Bach to Mahler. The analyses place the book's novel techniques in dialogue with existing tonal methodologies, such as Schenkerian theory, avoiding partisan debate in favor of a methodologically careful, pluralistic approach. Rings also engages neo-Riemannian theory-a popular branch of transformational thought focused on chromatic harmony-reanimating its basic operations with tonal dynamism and bringing them into closer rapprochement with traditional tonal concepts. Written in a direct and engaging style, with lively prose and plain-English descriptions of all technical ideas, Tonality and Transformation balances theoretical substance with accessibility: it will appeal to both specialists and non-specialists. It is a particularly attractive volume for those new to transformational theory: in addition to its original theoretical content, the book offers an excellent introduction to transformational thought, including a chapter that outlines the theory's conceptual foundations and formal apparatus, as well as a glossary of common technical terms. A contribution to our understanding of tonal phenomenology and a landmark in the analytical application of transformational techniques, Tonality and Transformation is an indispensible work of music theory.
