When Dada burst onto the European stage in 1916, it shocked and scandalized the public of its day with art forms, ideas, and attitudes which were so revolutionary that it is only in recent decades that they have begun to find recognition within the broad cultural movement known as postmodernism. In fact, many postmodern artistic and intellectual tendencies can be seen to have descended via an underground tradition from the experiments of the Dadaists earlier this century. Yet, the existence of this close link has been largely neglected by scholars. This book, for the first time, examines in depth the link between modernism and postmodernism and demonstrates the extensive similarities, as well as the few crucial differences between the ideas and art of the Dadaists on the one hand, and those of contemporary postmodern thinkers and artists on the other. Although they did not have access to postmodern terminology, it is clear that many Dadaists were essentially attempting to escape constrictive Enlightenment and modern(ist)structures in order to create a proto-postmodern space of différence, otherness, and flux. Their successes, failures, and compromises in this respect are very illustrative for anyone interested in the progress of our own intellectual and artistic culture in its wavering between modern and postmodern. This book offers a much-needed historical perspective and solid basis for the on-going debate on postmodernism.

At a time when postmodernism seems to have achieved a dominant position in cultural and critical theory, the contributors to this volume present a much needed corrective to the misleading images of modernism which have dominated recent debate. Theorizing Modernisms includes an account of European modernism, and analysis of the work of Apollinaire and Aberti, Wyndham Lewis and Mike Johnson, and Kert Schwitters. Steve Giles provides a much needed overview of the relationship between modernism and the avant-garde, postmodernism and modernity.

Rewritten versions of contributions to an international conference held at the University of Antwerp in May 1992. Starting point for the conference was the vagueness of the very terms 'modernism' and 'modernity'. In the first section a group of comparatists address the theoretical and terminological problems of modernism. Practical readings of modernist writers; discussions of different modernist movements; and, the work of critics who have contributed to debates about modernism make up the second section. The third section looks at the problem of modernism from an interartistic and interdisciplinary perspective.

Diversity And Decolonization In German Studies written by Regine Criser and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-13 with Social Science categories.

This book presents an approach to transform German Studies by augmenting its core values with a social justice mission rooted in Cultural Studies. German Studies is approaching a pivotal moment. On the one hand, the discipline is shrinking as programs face budget cuts. This enrollment decline is immediately tied to the effects following a debilitating scrutiny the discipline has received as a result of its perceived worth in light of local, regional, and national pressures to articulate the value of the humanities in the language of student professionalization. On the other hand, German Studies struggles to articulate how the study of cultural, social, and political developments in the German-speaking world can serve increasingly heterogeneous student learners. This book addresses this tension through questions of access to German Studies as they relate to student outreach and program advocacy alongside pedagogical models.

This collection of specially commissioned contributions by leading scholars in German Studies gives a comprehensive overview of the current and future state of the discipline in British and Irish universities; in particular in terms of topics taught and methodologies used in Undergraduate Programmes. Any such course provision faces the challenge of striking the right balance between academic standards, the expectations and interests of the students, demands by potential employers and the tightening of resources.
