John Henry Newman (1801 1890) chose as his epitaph the words, Ex umbris et imaginibus in veritaten ( Out of shadows and images into the truth ). These words are more than the expression of Newman s hope for the future. They summarize his lifelong quest to penetrate ever more deeply into the mystery of God s relationship to humankind and the ways in which men and women are able to gain insight into that relationship. / This collection of papers reflects on Newman s understanding of the nature of truth and the challenges to truth s survival in the contemporary world. At the same time, it provides a critical reflection on the continuing significance of Newman s thought. / Contributors include Colin Barr, Michael J. Buckley, Brian Daley, Paul J. Griffiths, Keith Hanley, and John Milbank.

In "Passion for Truth", author and scholar Fr. Juan R. Vélez painstakingly uncovers the life and work of Blessed John Henry Newman. In the story of his early years, his family upbringing and university education, and through his vast correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues, Vélez acquaints us with Newman, the loyal friend, profound thinker, prolific writer, and holy priest. A true Catholic gentleman, who can be admired and loved by all who love the Truth.Newman was a talented but timid young man, who often doubted his own competence, but was to become one of the most influential teachers and writers of the 19th Century.Starting life as a devout and promising Anglican scholar, he finished the race a faithful and unwavering Catholic priest and Cardinal, to the disappointment of some of his closest friends and the great joy of many others. His prominent position as an Anglican clergyman and Oxford don made his long anticipated conversion the subject of great interest to many of his contemporaries and once he crossed over to Rome, many Anglicans followed his lead. His clarity of thought as a scholar was such as is hardly seen in contemporary society and was even growing rare in his own day.A relentless pursuit of wisdom did not allow him to simply store away his knowledge but urged him to conform his life to what was true wherever and whenever he discovered it. This passion for Truth did not always gain him friends, but it ultimately gained him what he valued above all else: a home in the True Church of Christ.

Cardinal Newman died on August 11, 1890 at the age of 89.Although his mind remained lucid to the end, his body declined to the point that in the summer of that year it became evident to all that the end was near. However, on the evening of August 9 he staged a remarkable rally which was recorded by Father William Neville, his secretary and caregiver in his final years. Not recognizing his youthful step he was surprised when Newman entered his room, and he was-unbent, erect to the full height of his best days in the fifties; he was without support of any kind. His whole carriage was, it may be said, soldierlike, and so dignified; and his countenance was most attractive to look at; even great age seemed to have gone from his face, and with it all careworn signs; his very look conveyed the cheerfulness and gratitude of his mind, and what he said was so kind, his voice was quite fresh and strong, his whole appearance was that of power, combined with complete calm... [Ward,The Life of Cardinal Newman, vol.2,537] At his request he was buried in the grave of his friend Ambrose St. John. On the memorial were engraved the words Ex umbris et imaginibus in veritatem-from shadows and illusions into truth. All of his life Newman had been a soldier for Christ-prepared to do battle for the truth. This is the story of his spiritual journey; emerging from the shadows into the fullness of truth.

Saint John Henry Newman's life was dominated by a commitment to the truth. He listened to the voice of his conscience and followed its demands, even at the cost of career, security, reputation, friendship. An Oxford don, and probably the most famous preacher of his day, he was one of the most prominent figures in the Church of England. When he became a Catholic in 1845, this caused public scandal. He was frequently misunderstood by many, both Catholics and non-Catholics, for the rest of his life.He was remarkable for the breadth of his human sympathy; he was also a diligent and sympathetic pastor in a poor urban parish. During his life, and after his death, countless people have been helped by his witness and his writings. His care for God's people has continued, as the miracles linked to his intercession clearly show. Now, to celebrate the life England's newest saint, a selection of his writings and an introduction to his life are brought together in one volume. Including new and specially commissioned pictures and photographs illustrating his journey of faith, this is an unmissable read. This biography includes some of his most famous sermons taken from the archives of the Catholic Truth Society, est. 1868, such as The Second Spring, God's Will, and The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These works, published over 100 years ago, illustrate the range and power of this beloved Saint.

Truth And Responsibility A Personalist Reading Of Newman written by Jan Kłos and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-13 with Philosophy categories.

This book goes beyond a simple study of Newman’s thought and work and seeks to apply his deductions to modern value conflicts. Although it will be of particular relevance to academic readers with some prior knowledge of Newman’s works, it may also be of wider interest to students of history, philosophy, theology and spirituality. More generally, its unusual focus on Newman’s epistemology and philosophical deductions, and how these relate to present-day dilemmas, should also attract interest from his many non-academic followers and devotees. “The main value of this work lies in its original approach to Newman from a Polish Personalist perspective, and this (rather than as another amorphous study of Newman) could give it novelty value and attract real interest from Newman scholars and experts.” -Jonathan Luxmoore, Oxford-based writer and Church historian "How do we evaluate a human life, our own life? Beginning with John Henry Newman’s defence of his life, Jan Kłos in this volume sensitively explores from a personalist perspective how all our lives involve struggle with commitment, responsibility, and truth. In its emphasis on the narrative structure of human lives, the book makes a valuable contribution not just to the philosophy of personalism but to social theory overall." -Douglas Porpora, Professor of Sociology, Drexel University
