Simulation and Modeling is one of the most important and widely used techniques in many research areas. The available simulation tools are mostly meant for standalone use and do not attempt to address the overall scenarios. It would be advantageous and cost-effective to combine these models thus forming a new integrated simulation model based on individual existing components to model complex scenarios and understand the joint effect of multiple phenomena. In this book, we discuss a framework to integrate multiple autonomous simulation models into an integrated environment wherein we can model and execute complex scenarios involving multiple simulators. Our techniques are implemented in RAISE (Reflective Architecture for Integrated Simulation Environments); specifically, we design meta-level synchronizer and data exchange modules that support flexible constraint specification while supporting high levels of concurrency in the execution.

Simulation and Modeling is one of the most important and widely used techniques in many research areas. Simulation is particularly indispensable for studying large-scale and complex systems, which can be otherwise intractable to closed-form mathematical or analytical solutions. One of the limitations of simulation models is that they are typically designed to be executed and evaluated independently. The available simulation tools are mostly meant for standalone use and do not attempt to address the overall scenarios. It would be advantageous and cost-effective to combine these models thus forming a new integrated simulation model based on individual existing components to model complex scenarios and understand the joint effect of multiple phenomena. This will allow decision makers to explore alternatives and conduct low cost experiments in an integrated environment. The integration of different simulation models can not be done easily, since each of the individual models are implemented in part with different simulators which do not interoperate with one another. We need to integrate different expert simulation models that each captures relevant aspects of the real world. In this thesis, we propose a framework to integrate multiple autonomous simulation models into an integrated environment wherein we can model and execute complex scenarios involving multiple simulators. Our techniques are implemented in RAISE (Reflective Architecture for Integrated Simulation Environments); specifically, we design meta-level synchronizer and data exchange modules that support flexible constraint specification while supporting high levels of concurrency in the execution. We evaluate our proposed techniques via a detailed case study from the emergency response domain by integrating different real-world simulators - a fire simulator (CFAST), an evacuation simulator (Drillsim), a transportation simulator (TranSim), and a communication simulator (LTEsim). We believe that our proposed techniques will serve as fundamental tools and building blocks for building the next generation integrated simulation environments.

The purpose of this doctoral study is to advance the state of the art of the simulation and modeling of transportation systems by addressing some of the limitations of state-of-the-practice models such as the inability to deal with large amounts of data in real-time, the aggregate nature of the majority of models, the lack of network realism in driving simulation and human behavior realism in traffic simulation, and finally the inability to evaluate new and emerging Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications. Within this broader research area, the work is divided into five tightly-connected research sub-topics. Subtopic 1 aims at developing and validating a novel forecasting paradigm named SPN to forecast traffic data, so as to provide an efficient and effective way for online traffic simulation and modeling. The SPN provides higher predictive accuracy and requires dramatically less processing time compared with existing approaches.^Subtopic 2 develops a large-scale agent-based simulation model and validates it. The research demonstrates the feasibility of regional agent-based simulations while depending upon data readily available. Subtopic 3 proposes a semi-heuristic algorithm for estimating dynamic travel demand for large-scale simulation models. The algorithm manages to match the simulated traffic volumes to field counts while keeping the estimated Origin-Destination (OD) matrices close to the true ones. Subtopic 4 integrates a traffic simulator with a driving simulator to allow for human-in-the-loop simulation. The integrated simulator successfully shows differences in emissions levels among drivers with different years of driving experience. Finally, Subtopic 5 designs and implements an integrated IntelliDrive simulation testbed, and uses this testbed for the simulation and evaluation of an application named intelligent intersection.^The research demonstrates the mobility enhancement and environmental benefits of the application, as well as the advantages of using the testbed to design and evaluate IntelliDrive applications. The aforementioned contributions of this dissertation advance the state of the art in transportation simulation and modeling, broaden the range of transportation issues for which those models and tools can be used to address, and create a vision for a human-oriented, integrated, and intelligent next-generation simulation and modeling system.

A next generation open source subsurface simulator and user environment for environmental management is being developed through a collaborative effort across Department of Energy National Laboratories. The flow and transport simulator, Amanzi, will be capable of modeling complex subsurface environments and processes using both unstructured and adaptive meshes at very fine spatial resolutions that require supercomputing-scale resources. The user environment, Akuna, provides users with a range of tools to manage environmental and simulator data sets, create models, manage and share simulation data, and visualize results. Underlying the user interface are core toolsets that provide algorithms for sensitivity analysis, parameter estimation, and uncertainty quantification. Akuna is open-source, cross platform software that is initially being demonstrated on the Hanford BC Cribs remediation site. In this paper, we describe the emerging capabilities of Akuna and illustrate how these are being applied to the BC Cribs site.

The design and performance optimization of particle accelerators are essential for the success of the DOE scientific program in the next decade. Particle accelerators are very complex systems whose accurate description involves a large number of degrees of freedom and requires the inclusion of many physics processes. Building on the success of the SciDAC-1 Accelerator Science and Technology project, the SciDAC-2 Community Petascale Project for Accelerator Science and Simulation (ComPASS) is developing a comprehensive set of interoperable components for beam dynamics, electromagnetics, electron cooling, and laser/plasma acceleration modelling. ComPASS is providing accelerator scientists the tools required to enable the necessary accelerator simulation paradigm shift from high-fidelity single physics process modeling (covered under SciDAC1) to high-fidelity multiphysics modeling. Our computational frameworks have been used to model the behavior of a large number of accelerators and accelerator R & D experiments, assisting both their design and performance optimization. As parallel computational applications, the ComPASS codes have been shown to make effective use of thousands of processors. ComPASS is in the first year of executing its plan to develop the next-generation HPC accelerator modeling tools. ComPASS aims to develop an integrated simulation environment that will utilize existing and new accelerator physics modules with petascale capabilities, by employing modern computing and solver technologies. The ComPASS vision is to deliver to accelerator scientists a virtual accelerator and virtual prototyping modeling environment, with the necessary multiphysics, multiscale capabilities. The plan for this development includes delivering accelerator modeling applications appropriate for each stage of the ComPASS software evolution. Such applications are already being used to address challenging problems in accelerator design and optimization. The ComPASS organization for software development and applications accounts for the natural domain areas (beam dynamics, electromagnetics, and advanced acceleration), and all areas depend on the enabling technologies activities, such as solvers and component technology, to deliver the desired performance and integrated simulation environment. The ComPASS applications focus on computationally challenging problems important for design or performance optimization to all major HEP, NP, and BES accelerator facilities. With the cost and complexity of particle accelerators rising, the use of computation to optimize their designs and find improved operating regimes becomes essential, potentially leading to significant cost savings with modest investment.
