Privé de systèmes défensifs suffisants et situé à proximité des grandes voies de communication, Niederhergheim a connu une existence mouvementée. Dès la fin du XIIIe siècle, relevant en partie de l'abbaye de Murbach et des Habsbourg, ce village rural de Haute-Alsace voit se succéder divers seigneurs et propriétaires de droits : les nobles de Hergheim, les sires de Hattstatt... et finalement les Schauenbourg à partir de 1589 et jusqu'à la Révolution. En outre, épidémies, famines, hivers rigoureux et sécheresses estivales accompagnent les guerres et troubles successifs : incursion des Armagnacs, révolte des paysans, guerre de Trente Ans... Le village ne fut pas davantage épargné par la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cette monographie exprime les réalités du passé de Niederhergheim, les joies, les peines et les souffrances des précédentes générations. Parallèlement, elle fait revivre des traits et des aspects particuliers de l'histoire locale qui semblaient perdus pour toujours ou qui avaient laissé des traces diffuses dans la tradition orale locale.
