Bei Nietzsches Texten handelt es sich häufig um Reaktionen auf seine breitgestreuten Lektüren. Sein Lesen ist zugleich ein Schreiben, und es verläuft ebenso selektiv und assoziativ wie aneignend: So werden unter Nietzsches Hand etwa Lesefrüchte aus naturwissenschaftlichen Lexika ästhetischen Überlegungen einverleibt oder ethno-anthropologische Fachbücher im Kontext philosophiegeschichtlicher Einordnungsversuche zitiert. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) supported the unification of Europe and reflected on this like few other philosophers before or after him. Many of his works are concerned with the present state and future of European culture and humanity. Resisting the “nationalist nonsense” and “politics of dissolution” of his day, he advocated the birth of “good Europeans,” i.e. “supra-national” individuals and the “amalgamation of nations.” Nietzsche, Wagner, Europe analyzes the development of Friedrich Nietzsche’s ideal of European culture based on his musical aesthetics. Friedrich Nietzsche’s intellectual autobiography Ecce Homo has always been a controversial book. Nietzsche prepared it for publication just before he became incurably insane in early 1889, but it was held back until after his death, and finally appeared only in 1908. For much of the first century of its reception, Ecce Homo met with a sceptical response and was viewed as merely a testament to its author’s incipient madness. This was hardly surprising, since he is deliberately outrageous with the ‘megalomaniacal’ self-advertisement of his chapter titles, and brazenly claims ‘I am not a man, I am dynamite’ as he attempts to explode one preconception after another in the Western philosophical tradition. In recent decades there has been increased interest in the work, especially in the English-speaking world, but the present volume is the first collection of essays in any language devoted to the work. Most of the essays are selected from the proceedings of an international conference held in London to mark the centenary of the first publication of Ecce Homo in 2008. They are supplemented by a number of specially commissioned essays. Doch worin mag diese außergewöhnliche Faszination, die seine Leser bis heute in den Bann zieht, bestehen? Dieser Arbeit liegt die Überzeugung zu Grunde, dass die außergewöhnliche und schwer zu beschreibende Kraft des Werkes Nietzsches vor allem mit der eigentümlichen Verschränkung von Form und Inhalt zusammenhängt. Diese soll hier mit besonderem Fokus auf den Leser untersucht werden. Durch welche literarischen Mittel lässt Nietzsche den Leser was erfahren? Und welche Konsequenzen hat seine Art und Weise des Schreibens auf die Haltung des Lesers? Zwar ist der „Nietzscheleser“ an sich nie zu beschreiben, da jeder Leser sich und sein Leben in die Lektüre hineinträgt, dennoch möchte ich versuchen Hinweise in den sprachlichen Mitteln Nietzsches und in seinen eigenen Äußerungen über sein Schreiben zu finden, die eine gewünschte Wirkung seiner formulierten Sprache erkennen lassen. Nach einigen Vorbemerkungen zu Nietzsches Auffassung von Stil und Sprache soll der Aphorismus, der ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Schriften Nietzsches ist, in den Blick genommen werden. Er interessiert zunächst als außergewöhnliche Art des Philosophierens, besonders in Hinblick auf seine dialektische, offen-geschlossene Form. Anschließend sollen beispielhaft zwei Aphorismen der Fröhlichen Wissenschaft herausgegriffen werden und auf heraus stechende literarische Mittel untersucht werden. In einem anschließenden Exkurs soll besonders die Metapher in ihrem spezifischen Wahrheitscharakter nach Hans Blumenberg beleuchtet werden. Es handelt sich in dieser Arbeit um eine Auswahl von Aphorismen, der kein besonderes Schema zu Grund liegt, da dieses Vorhaben grundsätzlich mit jedem Aphorismus Nietzsches möglich wäre. Aus der Analyse sollen Konsequenzen und Wirkungen für die Denkhaltung des Lesers herausgearbeitet werden, die anschließend mit dem Charakter des „freien Geistes“, den Nietzsche entwirft, in Verbindung gebracht werden (Kapitel 4). Dabei leitet mich die These, dass die intensive Lektüre von Nietzsches Aphorismenbücher, genauer der Fröhlichen Wissenschaft als Einübung in eine philosophische Haltung des freien Geistes verstanden werden kann.
