The philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was almost wholly neglected during his sane life, which came to an abrupt end in 1889. Since then he has been appropriated as an icon by an astonishingly diverse spectrum of people, whose interpretations of his thought range from the highly irrational to the firmly analytical. Thus Spoke Zarathustra introduced the 'superman' and The Twilight of the Idols developed the 'Will to Power' concept; these term, together with 'Sklavenmoral' and 'Herrenmoral', became confused with the rise of nationalism in Germany. Idiosyncratic and aphoristic, Nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. Michael Tanner's readable introduction to the philosopher's life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings. It also explodes the many misconceptions fostered in the hundred years since Nietzsche wrote, prophetically: 'Do not, above all, confound me with what I am not!' Nietzsche claimed to be a philosopher of the future, but he was appropriated as a philosopher of Nazism. His work inspired a long study by Martin Heidegger and essays by a host of lesser disciples attached to the Third Reich. In 1935, however, Karl Jaspers set out to "marshall against the National Socialists the world of thought of the man they had proclaimed as their own philosopher." The year after Nietzsche was published, Jaspers was discharged from his professorship at Heidelberg University by order of the Nazi leadership. Unlike the ideologues, Jaspers does not selectively cite Nietzsche's work to reinforce already held opinions. Instead, he presents Nietzsche as a complex, wide-ranging philosopher - extraordinary not only because he foresaw all the monstrosities of the twentieth century but also because he saw through them.

'My humanity is a constant self-overcoming' Friedrich Nietzsche Nietzsche's thinking revolves around a new and striking concept of humanity - a humanity which has come to terms with the death of God and practises the art and science of living well, free of the need for metaphysical certainties and moral absolutes. How, then, are we to live? And what do we love? Keith Ansell-Pearson introduces the reader to Nietzsche's distinctive philosophical style and to the development of his thought. Through a series of close readings of Nietzsche's aphorisms he illuminates some ofhis best-known but often ill-understood ideas, including eternal recurrence and the superman, the death of God and the will to power, and brings to light the challenging nature of Nietzsche's thinking on key topics such as beauty, truth and memory. Extracts are taken from a range of Nietzsche's work, including Human, All Too Human, The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra and On the Genealogy of Morality.

Attempts to elucidate the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche through the experience of his writings. After a chapter devoted to Nietzsche's style and the proper way to read the philosopher, chapters focus separately on his thoughts on knowledge and reality, morality and politics, and religion. Each chapter presents fairly lengthy selections from Nietzsche's works (in both German and English) and then proceeds to comment on the texts with the help of additional brief selections.
