Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: Pidgins and Creoles, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction Nigeria and Papua New Guinea are two of many countries which have adopted English as their main language. But having so many other, substrate languages influencing the development of a English-speaking country, two major pidgin languages developed: Nigerian Pidgin and Tok Pisin. If one wants to compare these two pidgins with each other, it seems almost inevitable to consider their great geographical distance as well as their historical differences. But my intent in this work is not to elaborate on the status and function and development of the two pidgins but on their differences in grammar. Therefore I'll mainly focus on the noun phrase and the verb phrase. 2. Morphology 2.1 Plural marking on nouns in Tok Pisin The majority of the English based Creole and Pidgin languages both at the Atlantic coast and the South Sea waive marking plurality on nouns or rather use it very optionally. Thus, the same applies to Nigerian Pidgin and Tok Pisin. But if there occurs the need to make a clear distinction between singular and plural both pidgins absolutely dispose of a pluralizer. In Tok Pisin the most common way to express plurality is by the use of the particle ol, which at the same time is identical to the third person plural pronoun. Ol, clearly derived from the English 'all', occurs before the noun as opposed to the post-nominal English plural marking suffix -s. (1) Mi lukim dok. (2) Mi lukim ol dok. I saw the dog. I saw the dogs. (Siegel) But according to Geoff P. Smith (2002), " there is a great deal of variability, and the presence or absence of ol is still somewhat unpredictable" (p 66). This can clearly be seen in the following example, in w

"Are you a N[i]gerian pidgin aficionado? Are you visiting Nigeria as a tourist, an expatriate, an exchange student or as a researcher, a diplomat or a visiting leader as the case may be? Then this book is all you need to learn the rudiments of the Niigerian [sic] pidgin and expand your knowledge. The Nigerian pidgin also known as Naija language is arguably a lingua franca not only in Nigeria but also other West African English speaking countries and is widely used in the media, entertainment, religions, literature, education and in everyday conversation amongst Nigerians of different ethnic orientation. Daily we come in contact with the language and the peculiar nuances associated with it in various regions. Thus, learning the rudiments of Naija for formal usage as outlined in this guide is not simply a step in the right direction but also a timely one as it continues to play a significant role in national cohesion and linguistic expansion toward globalisation."--Page [4] of cover.

Igbo language is one of the 8 major Nigerian languages, spoken by Igbo speaking tribes of Nigeria. About 24 million people speak Igbo language. This includes the people of Abia state, Anambra state, Ebonyi state, Imo state, Delta state, Akwa Ibom state, Rivers state and some parts of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. This book is a guide to keep the tradition of Igbo speaking and culture and inculcating this to our children, and wives/husbands living in diaspora to keep the legacy. Igbo Language is not generally thought in Nigerian schools except in some schools in the East and sparingly in other parts of Nigeria. This has resulted to most people forgetting the basics which is the alphabets that serves as the bedrock of the language. This book provides some historical timelines, food, dressing, the Igbo character and the natural resources and wealth that make Nigeria the 'giant' of Africa. This book focuses on the structure and sociolinguistics of Nigerian Pidgin English. Its major aim is to serve as a compendium which touches different major aspects of NPE as it has been observed that earlier works in this area have focused only on one aspect or the other. It will offer a broad survey of the form and functions of Nigerian Pidgin (NP) in different domains. The book promises to investigate the use of NP in such domains as popular culture, advertisement, social media and online discussion fora. One major strong point of this volume is the fact that it will direct attention to different fertile areas of NP by focusing, inter alia, on its social functions, its morphology and syntax, its regional varieties, its (possible) use as a viable medium of instruction in school, the changing attitudes of people towards its use, the place of NP in relation to language planning and policy in Nigeria as well as sociolinguistic variation within NP. The book will make a significant contribution to the existing literature on NP as, unlike earlier studies in this area, it will explore the grammatical, sociolinguistic and perceptual aspects of the language. By bringing together the expertise of renowned Nigerian and international scholars who have conducted research in this area, the volume will be an essential resource for researchers, graduate and undergraduate students interested not only in Nigerian Pidgin but also on contact linguistics.
