For over twenty years, the Crew System Interface Division (HEC; www.hec.afrl.af.mil) of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base OH, has advanced night vision technology. This technology includes investigations into visual acuity through night vision goggles (NVGs), night vision imaging system (NVIS) cockpit lighting compatibility, wide field-of-view night vision devices, NVG measurement methodologies, plus human factors and aircraft integration issues. This document is a compilation of the complete text of selected publications and reports produced by AFRL/HEC addressing these various areas of night vision technology. It also includes a listing of relevant patent abstracts and a bibliography of other Division publications related to night vision technology.

Night Vision Processing And Understanding written by Lianfa Bai and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-11 with Computers categories.

This book systematically analyses the latest insights into night vision imaging processing and perceptual understanding as well as related theories and methods. The algorithm model and hardware system provided can be used as the reference basis for the general design, algorithm design and hardware design of photoelectric systems. Focusing on the differences in the imaging environment, target characteristics, and imaging methods, this book discusses multi-spectral and video data, and investigates a variety of information mining and perceptual understanding algorithms. It also assesses different processing methods for multiple types of scenes and targets.Taking into account the needs of scientists and technicians engaged in night vision optoelectronic imaging detection research, the book incorporates the latest international technical methods. The content fully reflects the technical significance and dynamics of the new field of night vision. The eight chapters cover topics including multispectral imaging, Hadamard transform spectrometry; dimensionality reduction, data mining, data analysis, feature classification, feature learning; computer vision, image understanding, target recognition, object detection and colorization algorithms, which reflect the main areas of research in artificial intelligence in night vision. The book enables readers to grasp the novelty and practicality of the field and to develop their ability to connect theory with real-world applications. It also provides the necessary foundation to allow them to conduct research in the field and adapt to new technological developments in the future.

Night Vision Technology And The Night Attack By Light Infantry written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with categories.

This monograph discusses the role that night vision technology plays in the planning and execution of the night attack by light infantry units at battalion level and below. The tactical framework for the night attack and the night vision equipment that support it are examined from the perspective of the individual soldier, small units, and the enemy. The purpose is to determine the role that night vision equipment plays in the night attack. Three models are used to describe and analyze the relationships between the soldier, the small units, and the night vision devices that they employ. These models highlight the specific capabilities and limitations that are experienced by fight infantry forces as they attack at night. Two historical examples are used to illustrate the application of night vision technology in the night attack--the attack by 42 Commando at Mount Harriet, Falkland Islands, 1982, and an attack by a fight infantry battalion conducted at the National Training Center in 1992. Both examples highlight the unique aspects of the night attack in the era of night vision technology. As a result of the consideration of the tactics, technology, and the historical examples a conclusion is reached. It is, that although the tactical system is sound, the over emphasis and over reliance on night vision technology without a firm understanding of its specific capabilities and limitations constitutes the unconsidered application of a technological innovation. Recommendations are made to correct this trend.

This project analyzes critical moments within the social history of night vision as both a technology and as a concept. Infrared night vision is presently one of the primary visual technologies employed by the American military. To fully assess the ethical and political consequences of this increasingly ubiquitous medium for both soldiers and civilian audience, I argue that we must look back over the two-hundred year history of this technology, long before it was first used in warfare. I begin by examining the effects invisible light had on the epistemologies of early nineteenth-century British proto-photographers William Herschel and Henry Fox Talbot. Within their infrared research, their allegedly ocularcentric epistemic theories appear thrown into crisis by the presence of light outside of the visible range of the spectrum: how could light and vision continue to signify veracity when the discovery of infrared rendered the eye not only fallible, but ostensibly irrelevant? Yet other early scientific research, such as John Herschel's colonially situated infrared studies, emphasizes how invisible light paradoxically facilitated the equation of vision and truth. Such varied postures towards invisible light at the time of its discovery, and the epistemic controversies they garnered, would continually reemerge throughout the history of night vision, including within more recent debates on the ethics of combat fought with drone-mounted night vision technology. Consequently, I examine how current military manifestations of night vision are at once technologically novel yet situated within older philosophical, positivist, and colonial visual economies, asking: how did infrared drastically change conceptions of race, the eye, subjecthood, and objectivity in the nineteenth-century? This analysis underscores the disavowed, overlooked, and yet pivotal roles infrared played within the histories of early photography, cinema, avant-garde art, colonialism, and nineteenth century theories of vision. This critical new perspective on the visual culture of the modern era allows me to conclude by reconfiguring current dominant assumptions regarding night vision, wherein I emphasize how face-to-face combat has the potential to be alienating and highly mediated an experience just as much as night vision technology equally has the capacity for an intimate, connected, and ethical relation to `targets.'
