Nights In The Big City written by Joachim Schlör and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with History categories.

This elegantly written book describes the evolving perception and experience of the night in three great European cities: Paris, Berlin, and London. As Joachim Schlör shows, the lighting up of the European city by gas and electricity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries brought about a new relationship with the night for both those who toiled at work and those who caroused in restaurants, pubs, and cafes. Nights in the Big City explores this change and offers a stirring portrait of the secrets and mysteries a city can hold when the sun goes down. Sifting through countless police and church archives alongside first-hand accounts, Schlör sets out on his own explorations with a head full of histories, exploring the boulevards and side-streets of these three great capitals. Illustrated with haunting and evocative photographs by, among others, Bill Brandt and André Kertész, and filled with contemporary literary references, Nights in the Big City is a milestone in the cultural history of the city.

Lambda Literary Award Finalist: A young Irishman finds love and danger in the shadows of Weimar Germany. Francis Bacon has never cared much for country living, so he is overjoyed when his father sends him to Berlin as punishment for his not-so-innocent flirtations with the other boys at school. With afternoons at the cinema, dinner at the Hotel Adlon, and nights at the most outrageous cabarets in Germany—and in his uncle Lastings’s bed—he’ll fit right in. The Great War having ended over a decade ago, and its resulting economic turmoil in the past, Germany is enjoying the “Golden Twenties”—a time of healthy fiscal growth, and creative and sexual resurgence, centered in Berlin. Yet dark clouds are gathering as Hitler consolidates power within the Nazi Party and brownshirts march through the streets. As tensions rise, Francis finds his uncle Lastings busy welcoming countless men into his hotel room—some invited for pleasure, others to be recruited for the fight against Bolshevism. But when the Nazis send Lastings fleeing for his life, Francis is left alone, penniless, and hunted, with only his keen sense of hedonism to distract him from a city that gets more menacing every night. Nights in Berlin is the 4th book in the Francis Bacon Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

He knew the city reasonably well, if anyone can ever really know Berlin to whatever extent. There was something enigmatic, maybe charismatic but certainly contradictory, even tragic about the metropolis that had always intrigued Steve… As a Londoner, he knew also that it was as difficult to understand a city as it was to comprehend a human being, yet always worth trying... Londoner Steve, a retired professional and published fiction author in his early sixties, is on a creative journey in Berlin. Being Jewish, he harbours some ambivalence about a city he has visited many times, and even before the Berlin Wall came down, though Steve has always sought to understand its intriguingly complex and enigmatic character. With his wife’s blessing, he resides alone in a rented apartment in his favoured leafy and trendy neighbourhood of Prenzlauer Berg. Steve feels that he now is getting to grips with the German capital’s postmodern zeitgeist, revealing itself against the still echoing vibes of a turbulent 20th century history. His aim is to complete the first draft of a contemporary novel set in this enterprising, cosmopolitan, easygoing, even indulgent metropolis. But he would never have anticipated embarking on a parallel journey, a voyage of self-discovery – with two fellow passengers, two women, neither of them his wife – that could end in tragedy... Last Days in Berlin offers a unique perspective of Berlin through the eyes of a man whose own personal dilemmas seem to mirror the city’s own uncertainties.

This night-time view of Berlin reveals a dazzling city full of color and light. Thanks to the vision of photographer Leo Seidel, Berlin at night has been transformed into a shimmering lightshow in this book. Here seventy images of well- and lesser-known sights capture the surprising mystique of the nocturnal city: the cold neon of billboards and construction sites, the warmth of illuminated windows and streetlamps; the glowing light of dusk as it merges buildings and sky. Because most of these photographs are taken over long exposures, the depopulated landscapes take on the haunting quality of a movie set. The transcendent beauty of Berlin, as seen through the lens of this gifted young artist, comes through in this stunning book. Illustrated throughout

Berlin in the early 1990s, right after the fall of the Berlin Wall: this is the place to be. Berlin-Mitte, the central district of the city, with its wastelands and decaying houses, has become the centre of a new movement. Artists, musicians, squatters, club owners, DJs and ravers are reclaiming the old city centre and bringing it back to life. This interregnum between two systems – the collapse of the old East Germany, the gentrification of the new Berlin – lasts only a few years. West Berliners, East Berliners and new residents from abroad join together to create music, art and fashion, to open bars and clubs and galleries, even if only for a few weeks. In the months following the fall of the Wall, there is a feeling of new beginnings and immense possibilities: life is now, and to be in the here and now feels endless. The phrase ‘temporary autonomous zone’ is circulating, it describes the idea – romantic and naive but, in the circumstances, not absurd – that, at a certain moment in history, you can actually do whatever you want. Ulrich Gutmair moved to West Berlin as a student in autumn 1989: two weeks later the Wall came down. He spent the next few years studying during the day in the West and exploring the squats, bars and techno clubs in the East at night. He fell in love with House and Techno and raved at Tresor, Elektro, Bunker and many other places that in the meantime have almost disappeared from collective memory. Ten years later he decided to write a book about that period in between, when one regime was brought down and a new one wasn’t yet established. When utopia was actually a place to inhabit for a moment.
