Darin geht Luhmann besonders auf die Bedeutungswandel der Begriffe Freundschaft und Liebe im Laufe des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts ein. Er stellt die grundlegende Frage, wieso sich die Liebesbeziehung als Intimitätsbeziehung entwickelt bzw. als Code für Intimität durchgesetzt hat und nicht z.B. die Freundschaft. Ein Grund, so Luhmann, ist die Sexualität – weil sie ein Störfaktor in der Freundschaft ist. Den Aspekt der Sexualität möchte die vorliegende Arbeit beleuchten. Es soll besonders auf die Rolle der Sexualität bei der Bildung von Intimbeziehungen eingegangen werden. Luhmann definiert die Gesellschaft als System, darin ist Liebe ein Kommunikationsmedium zur Bildung von Intimbeziehungen. Es gibt also bestimmte Codes und Verhaltensmuster wie sich Liebe entwickelt, zeigt und beweist. Der Einzelne Liebende muss im Anderen Anklang und Anknüpfpunkte finden, d.h. das eigene Verhalten so interpretieren wie das Verhalten des Anderen. Jeder Liebende handelt der geliebten Person gegenüber auf die Art und Weise, auf die er – im Falle dass er ebenfalls geliebt wird – auch behandelt werden möchte. Es gibt laut Luhmann keinen anthropologisch gegebenen Bedarf an Liebe. Ist Sexualität also die Grundvoraussetzung für die Liebe? Und wenn die Verwirklichung der Liebe unwahrscheinlich ist – wie Luhmann postuliert, wie können die Liebenden die Unwahrscheinlichkeitsschwelle der Liebe überwinden und eine dauernde Intimitätsbeziehung aufbauen? Luhmanns These ist, dass über die Aufwertung der Sexualität im 18. Jahrhunderts die Konkurrenz von Liebe und Freundschaft als Grundformel für eine Codierung der Intimität entscheidbar wird und die Liebe ‚gewinnt’. Die Ehe wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit nicht behandelt. Sie soll primär über die Klärung des Liebesbegriffs bei Luhmann und die Entwicklung der Intimitätsbeziehungen handeln.

In a crucial shift within posthumanistic media studies, Bernhard Siegert dissolves the concept of media into a network of operations that reproduce, displace, process, and reflect the distinctions fundamental for a given culture. Cultural Techniques aims to forget our traditional understanding of media so as to redefine the concept through something more fundamental than the empiricist study of a medium’s individual or collective uses or of its cultural semantics or aesthetics. Rather, Siegert seeks to relocate media and culture on a level where the distinctions between object and performance, matter and form, human and nonhuman, sign and channel, the symbolic and the real are still in the process of becoming. The result is to turn ontology into a domain of all that is meant in German by the word Kultur. Cultural techniques comprise not only self-referential symbolic practices like reading, writing, counting, or image-making. The analysis of artifacts as cultural techniques emphasizes their ontological status as “in-betweens,” shifting from firstorder to second-order techniques, from the technical to the artistic, from object to sign, from the natural to the cultural, from the operational to the representational. Cultural Techniques ranges from seafaring, drafting, and eating to the production of the sign-signaldistinction in old and new media, to the reproduction of anthropological difference, to the study of trompe-l’oeils, grids, registers, and doors. Throughout, Siegert addresses fundamental questions of how ontological distinctions can be replaced by chains of operations that process those alleged ontological distinctions within the ontic. Grounding posthumanist theory both historically and technically, this book opens up a crucial dialogue between new German media theory and American postcybernetic discourses.

Few of us have been spared the agonies of intimate relationships. They come in many shapes: loving a man or a woman who will not commit to us, being heartbroken when we're abandoned by a lover, engaging in Sisyphean internet searches, coming back lonely from bars, parties, or blind dates, feeling bored in a relationship that is so much less than we had envisaged - these are only some of the ways in which the search for love is a difficult and often painful experience. Despite the widespread and almost collective character of these experiences, our culture insists they are the result of faulty or insufficiently mature psyches. For many, the Freudian idea that the family designs the pattern of an individual's erotic career has been the main explanation for why and how we fail to find or sustain love. Psychoanalysis and popular psychology have succeeded spectacularly in convincing us that individuals bear responsibility for the misery of their romantic and erotic lives. The purpose of this book is to change our way of thinking about what is wrong in modern relationships. The problem is not dysfunctional childhoods or insufficiently self-aware psyches, but rather the institutional forces shaping how we love. The argument of this book is that the modern romantic experience is shaped by a fundamental transformation in the ecology and architecture of romantic choice. The samples from which men and women choose a partner, the modes of evaluating prospective partners, the very importance of choice and autonomy and what people imagine to be the spectrum of their choices: all these aspects of choice have transformed the very core of the will, how we want a partner, the sense of worth bestowed by relationships, and the organization of desire. This book does to love what Marx did to commodities: it shows that it is shaped by social relations and institutions and that it circulates in a marketplace of unequal actors.

This volume brings together key findings of the long-term research project ‘Religious Individualisation in Historical Perspective’ (Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University). Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios.
