It was an age without GPS and the Internet, without high-tech monitoring and instantaneous reporting. And it was a time when women simply didn t do such things. None of this deterred Sharon Sites Adams. In June 1965 Adams made history as the first woman to sail solo from the mainland United States to Hawaii. Four years later, just as Neil Armstrong very publicly stepped onto the moon, the diminutive Adams, alone and unobserved, finally sighted Point Arguello, California, after seventy-four days sailing a thirty-one-foot ketch from Japan, across the violent and unpredictable Pacific. She was the first woman to do so, setting another world record. Inspiring and exciting, Adams s memoir recounts the personal path leading to her historic achievements: a tomboy childhood in the Oregon high desert, an early marriage and painful divorce, and a second marriage that ended when her husband died of cancer. In the wake of his death and almost by accident, Adams discovered sailing. Six weeks after her first sailing lesson she bought a boat, and within eight months she set out to achieve her first world record. Pacific Lady recounts the inward journey that paralleled her sailing feats, as Adams drew on every scrap of courage and navigational skill she could muster to overcome the seasickness, exhaustion, and loneliness that marked her harrowing crossings.

In 1996 Jane Grossman left behind a comfortable life in Chicago and set off with her husband on their 34-foot sailboat, Iniki, to sail South America. What began as a chance to simplify their lifestyle and to see the islands gradually evolved to a sojourn of self-discovery, renewal and triumph over breast cancer. "Windshifts" is a true sailing adventure that chronicles the wonder and excitement, the difficulties and fears from a woman's perspective. Vivid details and delightful descriptions of exotic lands, cultural interactions and inevitable conflicts of a husband and wife confined to close quarters involve the reader with all of their senses. The tall ship Sofia sank off New Zealand’s North Island in February 1982, stranding its crew on disabled life rafts for five days. They struggled to survive as any realistic hope of rescue dwindled. Just a few years earlier, Pamela Sisman Bitterman was a naïve swabbie looking for adventure, signing on with a sailing co-operative taking this sixty-year-old, 123-foot, three-masted gaff-topsail schooner around the globe. The aged Baltic trader had been rescued from a wooden boat graveyard in Sweden and reincarnated as a floating commune in the 1960s. By the time Sofia went down, Bitterman had become an able seaman, promoted first to bos’un and then acting first mate, immersing herself in this life of a tall ship sailor, world traveler, and survivor.

Sailing Against The Wind written by Toni Larson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-26 with categories.

"Sailing Against the Wind" was written in 1980, though never published. It is an accounting of the three years the Larson family lived and traveled on a ketch rigged sailboat. The book is intended, not as an instruction manual on how to sail, but entirely as a diary of daily life and the difficulties found in close quarters while at sea. All five family members kept journals and when Toni sat down to write this, the journals gave a clear and accurate guide for her to work with. Over all the years since this manuscript was written, people have quizzed them, "What was it like? How did you do it? Was it hard? Were you scared?" The manuscript answers all those questions and has been shared with friends and family who were curious. The book does not cover the finer details of charting, trimming sails, repairing the engine, etc. Instead, it reveals how to live, survive, love and learn as a family while sailing against the wind. Now, in this era of downsizing into boats, rv's and tiny houses this diary of events may have relevance. The mid-1970s were the last years before the introduction of personal computers, the Internet, email, GPS, ATM, cell phones, and all forms of advanced electronics. Those things were not even available on the most luxurious boats at the time this adventure occurred. Navigation tools in the '70s were almost identical to that of explorers some 250 years before. However, if all those wonderful inventions had been available, it still would not have saved them from the many mishaps they encountered. And that is the lesson of this book.

Halfway across the Atlantic, Toad springs a leak. As the sea floods in faster, Nichols tries everything to stay afloat, desperately pumping the water out by hand. He loses the battle after 3 days and is forced to sink Toad. This is more than a sea-tale. It is the painful story of his marriage, his boat and himself.
