NIYAZI (1616-1694) was born in the small town of Aspuzi and was a poet of considerable talent. Sufism is the key-note of this poet's work; whatever else is to be found in his Divan is of secondary importance. It is obvious from many of his poems that at some time in his life he became a Perfect Master (Qutub) a God-realized soul. Although Niyazi wrote a good deal of prose his poetical work is confined to his Divan, which is restricted to gazels and qasidas... some of which are in Arabic while in others the lines are alternately in Arabic and Turkish. GAIBI (b. 1615-1620) was from a religious and when he was young, he received his teaching and training from them. After some years Gaibi joined the Malamet (blameless) Sufi order that goes back to the famous and infamous Sufi Perfect Master and Poet, Mansur al-Hallaj. In his gazels, qasidas he beautifully and powerfully states that the Absolute is the Perfect Master or God-realized soul who guides the lover of God along the Path through Love. Introduction on both poets Lives, Poetry & Times, Turkish Language & Poetry, Form of the Gazel & the Qasida, God-Realization, Sufism in Poetry. Three Appendixes, two on Malameti Sufism. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept and the meaning of all of these beautiful, powerful, spiritual poems. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (7 x 10) Paperback Edition. Pages 459. Paul Smith (b.1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Nesimi, Baba Farid, Lalla Ded, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Bulleh Shah, Mahsati Seemab, Jigar, Hali and many others, as well as poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and a dozen screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa Comments on Paul Smith's translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. "It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished.." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. "Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author). "I was very impressed with the beauty of these books." Dr. R.K. Barz. Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University.

THE SUFI WAY... Metaphysics & Stages of the Path in Poetry by Mansur al-Hallaj, Nizami, Ibn al-Farid and others: Translation & Introduction Paul Smith... THE TAWASIN. Mansur al-Hallaj was executed for declaring: "I am the Truth (Anal Haq)." Much has been written about his famous (and in¬famous) statement and his masterpiece The Tawasin in which he makes it. 'Written in rhymed Arabic prose... it sets forth a doctrine of saintship-a doctrine founded on personal experience and clothed in the form of a subtle yet passionate dialectic.' R.A. Nicholson. TREASURY OF MYSTERIES by Nizami. "Every line of his Treasury of Mysteries is a living witness to his absolute certainty that piety, devotion, humility and self-forgetfulness are the corner stones of total annihilation, which in turn is necessary for unification with God and the foundation of the edifice of eternal life." G. H. Darab. ROSE GARDEN OF MYSTERY by Shabistari... E.G. Browne: "On the whole, one of the best manuals of Sufi theosophy that exists." Rev. John A. Subhan: "Important... because it is a compendium of Sufi terminology in the form of question and answer." THE SUFI'S PROGRESS by Ibn al-Farid who is considered not only to be a poet but a Perfect Master (Qutub) a God-realised soul... it is his journey to unity with God that he reveals in probably the longest qasida (ode) in Arabic. BOOK OF ECSTASY by 'Arifi... Allegory of the human soul and also a rendition of the analogy of that soul and the macrocosmic soul... goes further than many mystical treatises in that it not only deals with the matter of spiritual ecstasy, but also emphasises that when attunement with the macrocosmic element is attained, even mystical experience is dwarfed. METAPHYSICAL QASIDAS OF NIYAZI & SPIRITUAL QASIDAS OF GAIBI: Two great Turkish Sufi Poets of the 17th Century in the form of the qasida explore in great detail Sufi spirituality and the Spiritual Path. POEMS COMPOSED WHILE READING 'GOD SPEAKS' OF MEHER BABA... Meher Baba's metaphysical views are most notably described in God Speaks. He upheld the concept of non-duality, the view that diverse creation, or duality, is an illusion and that the goal of life is conscious realization of the absolute Oneness of God inherent in all animate and inanimate beings and things. These free-form and rhyming poems by Paul Smith were composed during studying this masterpiece. The correct rhyme-structures have been kept in all forms of all the poems. Large Format Paperback 7"x 10" 618 pages. Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Yunus Emre and many others, and his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa

NAZIR AKBARABADI & SEEMAB AKBARABADIThe Two Greatest Sufi Poets of AgraSELECTED POEMSTranslation and Introduction Paul Smith Nazir Akbarabadi (1735-1830) is an Indian poet from Agra (old name 'Akbarabadi') known as the 'Father of Nazm', who wrote mainly Urdu ghazals and nazms. It is said that Nazir's poetic treasure consisted of about 200,000 but only about 6000 couplets remain. The canvas of Nazir's nazms is so vast that it encompasses all aspects of human behavior and every person can find nazms that can suit his taste. Many of his poems are about daily life and observations of things such as training a young bear or the pleasures of the rainy season, how beauty can fade, the lives of old prostitutes, etc. His poems are loved by folk today. Many of his poems are spiritual and he is seen as a true Sufi. Bankey Behari: 'He saw the Lord everywhere. His meditations led him to the realization of the Forms of the Lord as well as the Formless Divinity. He sings of Shri Krishna with the greatest fervour as of Hazrat Ali and the Prophet Mohammed, and turns his face if he comes across the pseudo-saints and religious preceptors who are wanting in realization and yet profess it. By far he is best in portraying the heat of his yearning for his vision.' Seemab Akbarabadi began ghazal writing in the 19th century and became a disciple of the poet Dagh Dehlvi. He composed a remarkable Urdu translation in rhyming poetry of the Quran. He also translated into Urdu the Masnavi of Rumi, a massive task. His ghazals are suffused with true Sufism. The Perfect Spiritual Master, Meher Baba while listening to the singing of a ghazal of Seemab was so impressed by a particular couplet that he stopped the singer and declared that because of it he had bestowed on Seemab the ultimate gift of liberation or God-realization. The first poem in this collection is that ghazal. This is the largest translation of their poetry into English, with the correct form & meaning. Introduction on their Life, Times & Poetry and on the poetic forms they used. Selected Bibliography. Large Format 7" x 10" 470 pages.Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu, Hindi and other languages including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Lalla Ded, Mahsati, Baba Farid, Iqbal, Vrind, Rahim and others, and his own poetry, fiction, biographies, plays, children's books and a dozen screenplays. www.newhumanitybooks.com

THE COMPLETE MAJNUN POEMS OF QAYS IBN AL-MULAWWAH AND NIZAMI'S LAYLA & MAJNUN Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Majnun was a real person! Qays (Majnun='madman') was a youth, a Bedouin poet in the seventh century of the Bani Amir tribe in the Najd desert in Arabia. He fell in love with Layla from the same tribe whom he was denied. (It is said that Shakespeare was inspired by their tale for Romeo & Juliet from their tragic love story). His rpoetry was composed before and some after his descent into love-madness (mast). Here, in the form of the qit'as in which they were composed, is the largest collection of his immortal poems translated into English. Nizami's famous telling of their tale came from these poems and other sources. It is impossible to underestimate the effect of Nizami's 'Layla and Majnun' on the world over the past 800 years. Many poets throughout this period have copied or been influenced by his story of the young lovers. Many Master-Poets besides Ibn Arabi, 'Attar, Rumi, Sadi, Hafiz and Jami have quoted from him or like him have used the story of the desperate lovers to illustrate how human love can be transformed into divine love through separation and longing. It is said that no one has painted a more perfect picture of women in Persian Literature than Nizami. The correct rhyme-structure of this long masnavi epic poem is here while retaining the beauty of the poetry, the mystical meaning and simplicity of the form. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" Pages 267 COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. Inayat Khan "Hafiz defies you to show him or put him in a condition inopportune or ignoble... He fears nothing. He sees too far; he sees throughout; such is the only man I wish to see or be." Emerson"Hafiz is highly esteemed by his countrymen as Shakespeare by us, and deserves as serious consideration." A.J. Arberry"There is no equal to Hafiz in poetry. He was a Perfect Master... His Divan is the best book in the world because it engenders feelings which ultimately lead to illumination." Meher Baba"Hafiz breathes originality in all his works ... in no other country, was ever born a genius so rare. He dwells on the degeneracy of his age, on the vanity of the world on universal charity, and on toleration and liberty of conscience." H. Wilberforce Clarke"We may state, without incurring the danger of modernization, that in these ghazals Hafiz applied quite consciously and consistently a method of revealing his hero's inner condition at which European literature first arrived only in the XX century." Michael J. ZandCOMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. The Persian epic that inspired Eric Clapton's unforgettable love song "Layla" and that Lord Byron called "the Romeo and Juliet of the East," in a masterly new translation A Penguin Classic The iconic love story of the Middle East, by a twelfth-century Persian poet who has been compared to Shakespeare for his subtlety, inventiveness, and dramatic force, Layli and Majnun tells of star-crossed lovers whose union is tragically thwarted by their families and whose passion continues to ripple out across the centuries. Theirs is a love that lasts a lifetime, and in Nezami's immortal telling, erotic longing blends with spiritual self-denial in an allegory of Sufi aspiration, as the amenities of civilization give way to the elemental wilderness, desire is sublimated into a mystical renunciation of the physical world, and the soul confronts its essence. This is a tour de force of Persian literature, in a translation that captures the extraordinary power and virtuosity of the original.
