Sebagai politisi, Njoto pernah masuk ke Konstituante, lalu diangkat sebagai anggota Dewan Pertimbangan Agung (DPA) yang sebagian tugasnya adalah menggencarkan indoktrinasi Manipol ke daerah-daerah sekaligus meninjau pelaksanaan undang-undang yang diprakarsai DPA (termasuk landreform). Dia akhirnya diangkat sebagai Menteri Negara dan dikenal sebagai penulis pidato-pidato Sukarno. Njoto juga menekuni sastra dan memiliki minat besar di bidang kebudayaan. Ia termasuk salah satu pendiri Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat (Lekra). Buku ini berusaha memberi pintu masuk ke dunia ide Njoto dengan membahas ketiga bidang yang digelutinya: politik, publisistik, dan kebudayaan.
