For decades scholars have reached no consensus on the writing order of Luke’s gospel. The author, through a thorough study of the word “orderly” in Luke 1:3; a comparison of Luke’s writing methodologies with those of the Greco-Roman historians; and a detailed investigation of the differences in the narrative accounts among the Synoptic Gospels, concludes that Luke writes in chronological order. The author also explains how Luke has employed writing methodologies commonly used by Greco-Roman historians to write the prefaces in Luke-Acts and divide the Gospel into sections, and the implications of these writing methodologies on Luke’s writing order. He explicates the possible reasons behind the differences in the writing style between the “travel” section (9:52b to 19:44) and the rest of the Gospel, proposes the central theme of Luke-Acts, and assesses the possible implications for accepting Luke’s chronological writing order on biblical studies.

I believe that this book along with the book of Acts was written by Luke. He was a companion of Paul and he was called a beloved physician. Interestingly, like John; he does not refer to him self in his works.Colossians 4:14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.2 Timothy 4:11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. The book is written to Theophilus in Luke and of course Acts which is another book that Luke wrote. Theophilus is considered by some to be a real person but there is no Biblical evidence that would show this to be true. There are some that contend that Theophilus is a person of merit because of the term "most excellent" that is applied to him in this book. Luke 1:3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, Most excellent is a term that is also applied to Felix in the book of Acts. Felix of course was a Roman Governor. This however is inconclusive. The other evidence though also lacks the merit of dogma. This is the explanation of the term. It has been interpreted as "Friend of God" or "Lover of God." This would apply to all those believers who were to read either book. This is logical but again the argument continues. There is also discussion that would say that books of Luke and Acts are all one book written by Luke. It appears in the Bible with the Gospel of John in between. I do note that one book is a book of Christ with the disciples being ancillary to what is going on. Acts then becomes a history of the disciples and what they did as Christ left in His ascension. I do not have an issue here in that I consider the entire Bible as one book. Luke is one of four to pen a Gospel and a Gentile. We note that the Holy Spirit superintends the canon as well as each individual book so it is what it is. I hope that the readers see the connection of all that goes on with the book. It is a unit of the actions of Christ. As you study and meditate, the Lord grant you blessings as I have been blessing in my study. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Remember that this is what I call an opinionary. You are getting pretty much a verse by verse opinion. My opinion is not the Word of God. You must be Berean in this.Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

He is like a man which built an house, and dig deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (Luke 6:48) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.(1 Corinthians 3:11) I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:6) In Luke chapter two God came down to earth in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. A premise was established throughout the Old Testament. A sacrifice is "required" for sin. Whether in Genesis 3:24 through the picture given in Exodus 12. There is a payment due for sin. That payment, for all eternity, was paid on the cross of Calvary. That is the foundation that the Son of God laid for the whole world. . . salvation through the blood of God's only Son. Here is the rest of the story. . . Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. (1 Corinthians 3:12-13) Jesus has already laid the foundation. Once we have received, into our hearts, the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9-10) we have laid that foundation for all eternity. Now, how do we build on that foundation? Notice that there are two types of materials, gold, silver, precious stones, or wood, hay and stubble. Which would you prefer your construction be made of? We can build upon that foundation in two ways. . . God's building materials OR the world's materials (wood, hay, stubble). That is our life's work. Building on the foundation of the truth of the gospel message. Oh, and what do we use for mortar? Look at this verse. . . But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a reward of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6) Faith is the "mortar" that holds this structure together. Without that, the walls will never stand the winds of adversity! In Luke 6, Jesus contrasts these two buildings, their contrasting foundations. How is your foundation? On what are you building your life's work? Will it stand? How about adversity? How do you weather the storms in your life? It ALL depends on that foundation. Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, Colosse, etc. These are the churches, the work that Paul built on the foundation of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When you tell someone about Jesus you are building upon that same foundation. That is our calling, that is our life's work. That is the gold, silver, and precious stones built upon the foundation of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
