Esta sinopse não é sumária nem golpe-de-vista nem chamariz. Dele faço uma paráfrase intertextual: "Prepare o seu coração para os poemas que vou cantar." Este cantar é de emoção viajante que nos incita ao imaginar no ser da escritura o que não está escrito. Nas mãos do leitor o poema é dele que livremente pode interpretá-lo conforme suas convicções imaginativas. Quando o Rio Amazonas penetra no Rio Pará e adiante o Rio Pará se mistura ao Rio Tocantins nasce a Costa Marapatá dos Abaetés e uma piracema infinita de flores. Outra piracema de Yaras de Icamiabas e de navegadores como nos diz o poeta João de Jesus Paes Loureiro. "A vela leva a canoa. A canoa leva a vela. É como a ave que voa Nas penas que voam nela." Engalana-se a samaumeira nossa Rainha da Floresta Amazônica que lança nos ventos as suas flores que são painas de paz e fantasia. Do mesmo modo o poema lança no ar suas painas de poesia.

Esta dissertação procura desenvolver uma explicação sociológica de dois poemas de Luís Nicolau Fagundes Varella (1841-1875) - "A roça" e "A cidade" (Cantos Meridionais,1869). Estes poemas, considerados significativos, foram estudados levando em consideração a problematização do contraste de "campo" e "cidade", ao mesmo tempo em que se buscou mostrar essa poesia no contexto da poesia romântica brasileira. A introdução discute o problema da biografia, baseando-se na explicação provisória de que para o estudo dos poemas de Fagundes Varella o conhecimento da vida do poeta não é relevante; na introdução também se discute o contexto da produção poética de Varella e sua produção como cronista. A seguir, a dissertação examina o poema "A roça", enfatizando o problema do campo e a presença da poesia bucólica na obra e, finalmente, o terceiro capítulo investiga o poema "A cidade". O epílogo sintetiza as questões tratadas anteriormente e mostra os temas gerais da literatura brasileira no século XIX; neste ponto o texto discute a relação entre literatura brasileira e literatura européia.

It includes discussions of texts from as early as the seventeenth century to writings of the late twentieth century. Reading and Writing the Ambiente also underscores the ways in which lesbian and gay self-representation in Hispanic texts differs from representations in Anglo-American texts.
