No Meat Required is a bestselling culinary and cultural history of plant-based eating in the United States that delves into the subcultures and politics that have defined alternative food—Diet for a Small Planet for a new generation The vegan diet used to be associated only with eccentric hippies and tofu-loving activists who shop at co-ops and live on compounds. We’ve come a long way since then. Now, fine-dining restaurants like Eleven Madison Park cater to chic upscale clientele with a plant-based menu, and Impossible Whoppers are available at Burger King. But can plant-based food keep its historical anti-capitalist energies if it goes mainstream? And does it need to? In No Meat Required, author Alicia Kennedy chronicles the fascinating history of plant-based eating in the United States, from the early experiments in tempeh production undertaken by the Farm commune in the 70s to the vegan punk cafes and anarchist zines of the 90s to the chefs and food writers seeking to decolonize vegetarian food today. Many people become vegans because they are concerned about the role capitalist food systems play in climate change, inequality, white supremacy, and environmental and cultural degradation. But a world where Walmart sells frozen vegan pizzas and non-dairy pints of ice cream are available at gas stations – raises distinct questions about the meanings and goals of plant-based eating. Kennedy—a vegetarian, former vegan, and once-proprietor of a vegan bakery—understands how to present this history with sympathy, knowledge, and humor. No Meat Required brings much-needed depth and context to our understanding of vegan and vegetarian cuisine, and makes a passionate argument for retaining its radical heart.

Vegetarians and vegan are people too. Learning to cook a meal or two to cater to your guests is no more difficult than roasting a leg of beef. This book has been written for every mother-in-law or possible mother-in-law, who's off-spring is about to bring home a Vegan or Vegetarian partner, but has no idea what to cook for him or her. It's okay to ask what they can and cannot eat, most don't bite, sharing their dietary habits with you is usually quite okay. However, if you just canot bring yourself to ask directly, and it's the first time, play it safe and go with a Vegan menu. You can talk to them over dinner (or lunch) and find out a little more for the next time. There are many people who keep the Fasts and Abstinences prescribed by their Church, and there are many more who would do so if their food was served up and cooked in a healthy way. The recipes, I have here have come from my grandfather's and father's private collections. My father trained as a chef during his time in the NZ and Royal Navy. Much like his father before him, he gave up cookery to take a 'real' Job that actually paid well enough for him to support his family. During the 1950's and 60's, chefs were not very well paid, with many of them having 2nd jobs to help pay the bills. Sadly, my father's love of cooking without meat was not allowed to flourish. Instead, he and my mother raised four healthy children, who all cook meals without meat, meals where the main ingredients are vegetables. However, for many, vegetables are still a little mis-understood. Often it is seen in kitchens in many homes that vegetables are served only as boiled or fried. I do not pretend to teach in this book, only to give a few novel and useful ideas or recipes that most people preparing food will find quick and economical, and also to show that a non-meat diet is both healthy and appetising. My aim with this project is to bring vegetarian and vegan cooking within the range of most people, while many of the dishes are good enough for any restaurant table, they would be a welcome meal at any table.A word in conclusion to the food shopper, there are many alternative products on the market for those living a vegertarian or vegan lifestyle. If a recipe refers to a product that you do not use, please refer to my page on substitutes.Chapters include: Explanation of Vegetarian diets, Salads, Dressings & Sauces, Lentils Rice Beans & Macaroni, Vegetables, Soups, Fruit, Desserts & Sweets, Eggs, Fish & Poultry. There is a selection of over 100 recipes that include all styles of vegetarian and Vegan diets. As well as a page on substitutes for those of you who want to convert eg. A pollotarian dish to a Vegan dish or a Vegetarian - Lacto dish to a Vegetarian - Ovo dish. Enjoy. Look out for my other books coming out soon - 3 to 5 ingredient Vegetarian and vegan cookery, Vegetarian & Vegan with Paleo Cookery, The Gluten Free Vegetarian & Vegan, Pollotarian & Pescatarian Cookery and my short ebook butters, pastries and milk for vegan and vegetarian cookery.

Plant-Based Diet In simple terms, it just means eating more vegetables than you're used to. It means replacing your meat servings with fruit and vegetables whenever you can. That's what makes it a "plant-based" diet. There are often misconceptions as to what this diet entails. Some confuse it with vegetarianism and others confuse it with veganism. Neither are accurate. - Vegetarianism This eating philosophy dictates that no meat consumption is allowed. ALL your foods will have to be vegetables and/or fruit. There are different types of vegetarianism and they're named according to the exceptions that people make with the diets. Those who consume dairy products such as milk and cheese are known as lacto-vegetarians. Those who consume eggs are referred to as ovovegetarians. Then we have pescatarians who eat fish and so on. While these exceptions exist, the cardinal rule is that NO poultry or red meat is allowed in the diet. - Veganism Veganism is much more extreme and disallows the consumption of any food that is meat or an animal by-product. So, that eliminates dairy products such as milk, cheese, etc. from the diet. There'll be no consumption of eggs or fish either. The goal of most vegans is to leave as small a carbon footprint on the planet as possible, and to be kind towards animals.

The European Commission demanded in March that desinewed meat, which closely resembles minced meat and is used in many processed meat products, must be classified as "mechanically separated meat." Under EU rules, this meant that it could no longer be obtained from the bones of cattle, sheep and goats. The Government was caught unawares and has so far failed to protect UK producers despite that it has made it clear that there are no food safety risks associated with the use of desinewed meat. This report highlights the impact that the Commission's decision has had on the UK meat industry. One producer of desinewed meat, Newby Foods Ltd, has been forced to make almost half of its workforce redundant. Consumers are also expected to pay a price as desinewed meat, traditionally used in value ranges, is replaced by more expensive cuts of meat. The Committee's inquiry found that although similar processes are used elsewhere in the EU, only the UK has been forced into a ban after being threatened with "safeguarding measures" by the Commission. Now we must put pressure on the Commission to bring forward visits to other Member States so that there is a level playing field for our producers. We are now in the absurd situation where we could see this meat imported from elsewhere in the EU to take the place of domestically produced meat. The Committee also criticises the European Commission for failing to provide oral evidence to the Committee's inquiry, saying that it shows a "worrying disregard for democratic accountability
