Traditionally, in British society, the milkman has been a family friend, a sex symbol and a cheerful chappie. He has been the eyes and ears of the community, and his genetic legacy has supposedly passed into the lineage of housewives. This collection of folk tales about milkmen covers the history of the job and the milkman's everyday experience. The book is structured by the milkman's working day. It starts with the alarm-clock and ends with the milkman returning home in search of sustenance and tender loving care. The book is less about changes in the dairy industry and more about the work experiences of the people who have delivered milk. Many milkmen are featured: Chris Frankland delivered over eight million pints before he retired at seventy-four; Alistair Maclean drove two million miles across the north coast of Scotland in fifty years; and Tony Fowler, an award-winning Leicestershire milkman, helped to put over fifty people in prison. For more than thirty years the author has collected milkman stories through oral testimony, newspaper archives, anecdotes, diaries, books and more formal interviews.

As a first time parent of adopted infants, Terrell faced multiple questions of not only how to be a new parents and father, but also how to explain to his sons that they are adopted and what that means. He searched for direction at the library, multiple seminars and educational classes and found them to be little help. The best advice he found was to always use proper and consistent terms and to keep his messages short and simple. Terrell and his sons visited his ranch frequently and became enamored with the cattle and the calves. Terrell made up stories for his sons that would continue every night at bedtime. One night he decided to make up a story about a baby calf whose mother couldn't take care of him and who went through the pasture looking for another Mommy to adopt her newborn baby. Upon request by his boys he found himself repeating the story on a nightly basis. When his boys were old enough to ask why they had different skin, why their eyes were a different color, and why they didn't look the same as he did he found himself a simple answer, because you are adopted. They instantly related it to the story and never questioned what adoption was, his love for them, the love of their birth mother and the circumstances as to why they were adopted. Because of their response and total amount of comfort with adoption Terrell wanted to share this story with other adoptive parents.

The Winter Without Milk written by Jane Avrich and has been published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Fiction categories.

Jane Avrich explores the perils of desire in these fifteen brilliant stories. Here are characters irresistibly attracted to excess -- material, emotional, spiritual -- who must in the end choose between a life of self-indulgence and a life of self-control. The results are both disastrous and uplifting, and often wickedly funny. Throughout The Winter Without Milk are reimagined characters from literature and history -- Oedipus, Lady Macbeth, Scheherezade, for example -- as well as everyday people who want more. Avrich's writing ranges from whimsical to cerebral. She pays homage to everyone from Kafka to Keats to Sophocles but is very much an original and a major new talent in contemporary fiction.

No one can deny the fact that the cow is the primary dairy animalspecies to provide humans with nutritious dairy foods through itsabundance of lacteal secretion. The goat or other minor dairyspecies will never be able to compete with the cow in terms of thevolume of milk production. Yet, the contribution of milks fromother secondary domesticated dairy species to the survival andwell-being of mankind around the world is immense and invaluable.Testament to the importance of non-bovine milk is that more peopledrink the milk of goats than that of any other single species inthe world. In developing and under-developed counties, the secondary dairyspecies play a crucial role in supplying the food and nutritionalneeds of the people in those regions. Due to the unavailability ofcow milk and the low consumption of meat, the milks of minorspecies such as goat, buffalo, sheep, and camel are critical dailyfood sources of protein, phosphate and calcium. Furthermore, because of important and inherent hypoallergenic properties, milksof certain species such as goat milk have been recommended assubstitutes in diets for those with cow milk allergies. Editors Park and Haenlein have assembled dairy and nutritionexperts from around the world to contribute to the Handbook ofMilk of Non-Bovine Mammals. Secondary dairy species addressedare the goat, sheep, buffalo, mare, camel, yak, deer (reindeer),sow, llama, alpaca, moose, musk ox, caribou, ass, elk, pinniped, polar bear and human. The book comprehensively covers the mostimportant aspects of milk production including: trends and methodsof raw milk production in different regions; compositional, nutritional, therapeutic, physico-chemical, and microbiologicalcharacteristics of the milks; processing technology; and types, distribution and consumption of the manufactured products fromminor species milks. Of special note is coverage comparing specifichuman health attributes of milk from the various species, includingnutritional, allergenic, immunological, and cultural factors.Because secondary dairy species have such a significant impact onhuman well-being and survival in many parts of the world, theHandbook of Milk of Non-Bovine Mammals is an essentialreference book of leading-edge information for dairy scientists, nutritionists, food chemists, allergy specialists, healthprofessionals, and allied professionals.

Here is the only all-purpose, appetizers-to-candy cookbook for the millions of Americans who must avoid having milk and milk products in their diets. Included here are many easy-to-follow recipes for baked goods (which are usually laden with dairy products) for the lactose intolerant or milk-allergic sufferer who must either learn to bake milk-free or go without cakes, cookies, pies, muffins, biscuits, and puddings. The appendix also lists recipes for baked goods that are egg-free. "Most people who deal with food intolerances day in and day out become pretty good 'scratch' cooks. I wrote this book as an all-occasion cookbook. The idea is to give you lots of choices. The Milk-Free Kitchen is focused on all the things you can have. The idea behind every recipe here is that the food should taste good. I hope you will enjoy your milk-free meals and that you and the people with whom you share them will not feel deprived or 'different'"—Beth Kidder
