On Christmas night 1776 George Washington and twenty-four hundred men stepped off from the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River to cross the icy waterway. They went on to win a decisive victory at Trenton, New Jersey, and then later at Princeton. The battles changed the course of the Revolutionary War. The first official efforts to memorialize the heroic event began in Pennsylvania in 1895. A park commission was created in 1917, and they formally dedicated the park in 1921. The park includes the historic shoreline, the McConkey Ferry Inn and Thompson-Neely House. Both buildings played a role in that fateful evening. Over the years millions of visitors have come to the park and contemplated the Crossing, the famed painting of Washington Crossing The Delaware by Emanuel Leutze, picnicked on the grounds, played on the sports fields, and walked their dogs. Visitors have also enjoyed the beauty of the Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, and climbed to the top of the Bowman's Hill Observation Tower. Find out why this park is one of the jewels in the crown of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's historic sites.

This is the story of Colonel John Haslet, an Irish immigrant to the American colonies who made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for his adopted country. During this pivotal moment in America’s war for independence against Great Britain, a newborn nation struggled to survive against a militarily superior force deployed by a mighty empire. This is also a chronicle of the inspirational leadership and service of the Delaware Regiment that Haslet formed and guided, told as part of a more wide-ranging narrative about the 1776 campaign of Washington’s army. That battered but resilient force faced the prospect of total defeat in the winter of 1776–1777 as the quest for American independence hung in the balance.

Washington Crossing is one of America's most revered historic landmarks. The crossing site is marked by the creation of two historic parks: Washington Crossing State Park, New Jersey, created in 1912, and Washington Crossing Historic Park, Pennsylvania, created in 1917. Washington Crossing illustrates how these two parks commemorate George Washington's courage to lead his army across the ice-choked Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 to attack an isolated garrison of Hessians located at Trenton, which would turn the tide of the American Revolution. Filled with images from the collections of historian Peter Osborne, the Washington Crossing Foundation, the Bucks County Historical Society, the Trenton Free Public Library, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the book includes an exposé of Emanuel Leutze's famous painting Washington Crossing the Delaware--a world-renowned symbol of freedom. Robert W. Sands Jr. holds a master of arts in museum professions from Seton Hall University. He is the author of three previous Images of America books: Glassboro, Woodbury, and Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Patricia E. Millen holds a degree in American studies. An author of two books and numerous articles, she began her career at Washington Crossing State Park and is a founding board member of the Washington Crossing Park Association.

The Five Mile Woods Preserve, located in Lower Makefield Township, Pennsylvania is a remarkable place. Within its boundary is the only remaining section of the Fall Line in Pennsylvania that is undisturbed. The unique geological feature is the meeting point of the two ancient geologic provinces, the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Piedmont Plain. It is home to a number of rare plants and a oak-beech forest. The Preserve also has a fascinating history. William Penn signed the patent that allowed an early Quaker settler to purchase the land in 1684. The families that lived there for more than two centuries were prosperous farmers. The Preserve is also an excellent example of various land uses over the last three centuries as it has been farmed, used for pasture, timbered and is now covered by a forest. Finally, it is a story of how visionaries saved the Woods from being developed for housing and for future generations of township residents to enjoy.
