Do Candelaio (1582) aos Furori (1585), o entrelaçamento de filosofia, literatura e pintura constitui um dos núcleos teóricos mais importantes do pensamento de Giordano Bruno (1548-1600). O conjunto das sete obras italianas se abre com uma comédia na qual o protagonista é um pintor-filósofo e se completa com um diálogo no qual um filósofo-pintor pinta e comenta imagens. Para o Nolano, filosofar (mito da caverna em Platão e nos neoplatônicos) e pintar (mito das origens da pintura em Plínio, Quintiliano, Alberti, Vasari) significa sobretudo partir da sombra e fazer a desesperada tentativa de superar-lhe o umbral. À luz deste tema, documentado com uma preciosa iconografia, Nuccio Ordine analisa com clareza e rigor a gênese e o desenvolvimento da obra italiana de Bruno, mostrando a profunda unidade que liga a pièce parisiense aos seis diálogos londrinos. Trata-se de obras concebidas como um programa preciso e orgânico. No Candelaio, como numa verdadeira ouverture, já se configura uma série de temas que serão posteriormente desenvolvidos nos seis movimentos sucessivos da 'nova filosofia'. Bruno 'reescreve', enfim, em nome do infinito, as relações do homem com a natureza e com o saber, com a língua e com a literatura. Funde céu e terra, forma e matéria, religião e vida civil, diálogo e comédia, sério e cômico. Quer fazer 'ver' o que os outros não vêem. E o faz - basta pensar na original releitura dos mitos de Acteon e de Narciso - com a plena consciência de que cada transgressão gera uma metamorfose, uma nova consciência de si mesmo e do mundo à sua volta. Assim, não será por acaso que o filósofo apaixonado pela sabedoria testemunhará com a sua própria vida o vínculo profundo entre existência e conhecimento, palavra e pensamento, biografia e filosofia.
