A preprototype (brassboard model) Infrared Temperature Profile Radiometer (ITPR) was tested on the NASA Convair-990 aircraft expedition during June 1970. The objectives of the airborne ITPR experiment were to obtain data to test various techniques planned for deriving temperature soundings from spaceborne ITPR measurements and to specify the transmission characteristics of the atmosphere and clouds. This paper describes the instrument and shows various results obtained from the airborne measurements.

A quasi-objective method for deriving 500-mb geopotential heights with the aid of satellite cloud observations is presented. The method uses satellite-observed cloud patterns in conjunction with a forecast 500-mb height field which is separated into additive short- and long-wave component fields. Empirical relationships between the cloud patterns and the short-wave component field are used to modify the pattern of the latter, and regression equations are used to specify extrema values. The 500-mb heights are retrieved by the direct addition of the modified short-wavelength field to the long-wavelength field. Procedures for using this method operationally are presented, and results of real-time modifications can contribute to significant improvements in the analysis.

Scattering of infrared radiation by water clouds has been calculated from the Mie theory. Tables are presented for: the phase function and the degree of polarization for each degree of scattering angle; the volume cross sections for extinction, scattering, and absorption; and the albedo for single scattering. Three models are used, representing altostratus, nimbostratus, and stratocumulus clouds.
