El Diseño Estructural se concreta con el dimensionado de los elementos propuestos en el mismo, para lo cual, es necesario evaluar las Acciones que van a afectar a la estructura, o lo que es lo mismo, realizar un ""Análisis de cargas"", que como es sabido, son éstas las que motivan la existencia de la estructura resistente en una obra de Arquitectura. Cuando se diseña la estructura, del mismo modo que al diseñar la obra completa, se debe tener en cuenta el aspecto morfológico del todo y de cada una de las partes. En cada elemento estructural, su capacidad resistente se considera, de acuerdo al material, en relación directa a la característica geométrica determinante de su sección transversal, de acuerdo a la solicitación. La forma estructural está en relación directa a la función del elemento y a la solicitación o estado tensional a que está sometido. El desarrollo de estos puntos constituye una primera parte del libro, que permite, en segundo término evaluar y ""determinar los esfuerzos"" a lo que está sometido cada uno de los elementos que constituyen la estructura, diferenciándolos en función a los mismos. En esta segunda etapa se estudia la tercera de las exigencias básicas estructurales que es la Resistencia, por lo que trata la Resistencia de los materiales, y define los esfuerzos básicos predominantes en cada elemento. Por último, en una tercera parte se ve el Dimensionado, que es ""darle dimensiones a la sección transversal"", dentro del cual se puede hablar de ""dimensionado"" propiamente dicho, o la verificación de la estructura propuesta, a partir de la evaluación cualitativa y cuantitativa realizada anteriormente, es decir conociendo la magnitud de los esfuerzos a los cuales estará sometida la pieza.
