Il 6 aprile le strade d'Abruzzo si sono riempite di una folla di gente in pigiama. Molti di loro erano scalzi mentre piangevano i propri morti. A due giorni dal terremoto, un furgoncino è entrato nella piazza di uno dei centri più colpiti dal sisma. A bordo c'erano degli sciacalli che vendevano carne a 80 euro al chilo. È notte fonda quando la terra comincia a tremare. A L'Aquila e dintorni la gente si riversa nelle strade e assiste impotente allo spettacolo della devastazione. Le crepe avanzano spietate fino a squarciare i muri, le pareti collassano e mettono a nudo migliaia di piccole intimità domestiche. Improvvisamente, sotto il cielo dell'Abruzzo si stende un panorama di camere da letto ribaltate, armadi scardinati, dispense a cielo aperto e water sradicati. È questo il nuovo mondo in cui Sara e i suoi concittadini si trovano a vivere. Da un momento all'altro le loro abitazioni e i loro affetti sono stati inghiottiti dalla terra. Adesso non resta che cominciare una nuova vita nel microcosmo improvvisato di una tendopoli. Ma come si può ripartire da zero mentre là fuori è tutto un frastuono di gente che fa la fila per andare in mensa, che litiga per contendersi una coperta, che sbraita per avere una tenda più grande? Come si può pensare al domani quando l'oggi è una distesa di macerie attorno alla quale si accalca un'umanità completamente spaesata? Sara è fra quelle persone fin dal primo giorno, sfollata fra gli sfollati, e registra tutto quello che le succede intorno: guarda il coraggio e le miserie dei suoi compagni di sventura e osserva quel che resta della sua città. Il suo è lo sguardo di un animale che fugge da un bosco in fiamme: ha il terrore negli occhi e corre alla ricerca di un rifugio provvisorio, in attesa che tutto torni come prima. Ma Sara lo sa bene. Niente torna.

The recent vast upsurge in social science scholarship on job precarity has generally little to say about earlier forms of this phenomenon. Eloisa Betti’s monograph convincingly demonstrates on the example of Italy that even in the post-war phase of Keynesian stability and welfare state, precarious labor was an underlying feature of economic development. She examines how in this short period exceptional politics of labor stability prevailed. The volume then presents the processes whereby labor precarity regained momentum— under the name of flexibility— in the post-Fordist phase from the early 1980s, taking on new forms in the Craxi and Berlusconi eras. Multiple actors are addressed in the analysis. The book gives voice to intellectuals, scholars, politicians and trade unionists as they have framed the concept and debates on precarious work from the 1950s onwards. Views of labor law experts, politicians and public servants are investigated in regard to labor regulations. Positions of the very precarians are explored, ranging from rural women, industrial homeworkers and blue-collar workers to physicians, university researchers and trainees, unveiling the emergence of anti-precarity social movements. The continuous role of women’s associations and feminist groups in opposing labor precarity since the 1950s is prominently exposed.

Edward Bellamy (Chicopee, 26 marzo 1850 - Chicopee, 22 maggio 1898) raggiunse la fama con il celebre romanzo utopico "Guardando Indietro, 2000-1887 (Looking Backward)" che pubblicò nel 1888. Dopo una partenza lenta, il libro raggiunse le 300.000 copie nel 1891, ispirando imitazione, analisi, acrimonia e rispetto; fu disprezzato da alcuni come troppo radicale e da altri come non abbastanza. Le critiche rivolte a Looking Backward richiedevano ulteriori spiegazioni della sua società utopica. E Bellamy provò a darle ne "La Grande rivoluzione (Equality)". Lo cominciò a scrivere nel 1894 pubblicandolo nel 1897, un anno prima di morire. Il libro costituisce così una sorta di testamento dello scrittore, ma anche una spietata critica al capitalismo ed un punto fermo utile ancora oggi alla ricerca delle soluzioni al problema sociale.
