This thesis is concerned with methods for predicting the acoustic properties of absorbing surfaces and the effectiveness of noise abatement schemes in heavily trafficked city canyon streets. Causality and reality conditions are verified in some existing mathematical models for sound propagation in rigid frame porous media. Several simple and accurate rational approximations to the Attenborough models and to the Stinson and Champoux model are derived. A new computationally efficient two-dimensional Green's function for sound propagation from a coherent line source in the vicinity of the impedance ground and two parallel rigid walls is developed. In this function the infinite sum of integrals due to the multiple reflections from the walls is reduced to a single integral term. The results are compared against those obtained from the method of normal mode decomposition. The Green's function can be applied in boundary integral equation programs which predict the levels of sound in irregular canyons. Using the Thomasson expressions for sound propagation above an impedance ground a three-dimensional image source model is derived.A new scale model facility is developed in which particular attention is given to accurate modelling of site conditions. The acoustic performance of several noise abatement schemes is investigated at various receiver heights for noise fields produced by different categories of vehicles travelling in the two lanes. The results are discussed in terms of the attenuation rate predicted along the canyon and the insertion loss. It is shown that although the effect from complex noise abatement schemes is significant it cannot be predicted by simple addition of the effects from the individual schemes.
