The current diversity within the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) reflects discontinuity with D.S. Warner's original doctrine of sanctification, but continuity with the claim of non-creedalism. At the outset of the Church of God movement, there was conformity and general agreement with the teaching of entire sanctification as Warner, the chief pioneer of the movement, understood it, but this has diversified into a broad spectrum of understandings. The claim of non-creedalism has always been made by the movement. It was held to be a result of sanctification. Warner believed that if people became truly sanctified, then united by the Holy Spirit in love, they would drop all formal creeds and adhere to the Bible as their rule of faith. Since the understanding of sanctification within the movement is no longer uniform and yet the claim to be non-creedal remains strong, the concept of non-creedalism has stood the test of time. This dissertationi traces the trajectory of the teaching of entire sanctification and non-creedalism in the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) and those groups that trace their theological roots back to Daniel S. Warner, the principal pioneer of the Church of God movement. The study highlights the history of the tension between the claim of non-creedalism and the desire to impose a doctrine of sanctification. Besides tracing the changes that took place over the one hundred and forty year history of the Church of God movement, the study also summarizes the present spectrum of thought. From a cultural-linguistic viewpoint this study examines the cultural grammar of sanctification to see if objectives are still intact, even though some of the language describing holiness may have changed. Much unity still exists among the diversity. Non-creedalism is stronger in practice today than at the inception of the movement. The teaching of entire sanctification, also referred to as Perfect Love, Christian Perfection, or holiness, has changed over time, not only within the Church of God, but also within the broader holiness community. Today's assessment of John Wesley's original view of Christian Perfection and the variations of the understandings among current Wesleyan scholars are highlighted as well, placing the history and views of the Church of God within the scope of the broader evangelical community.

The volume presents a range of theological standpoints regarding the filioque. With some contributors arguing for its retention and others for its removal, still others contest that its presence or otherwise in the Creed is not what is of central concern, but rather that how it should be understood is of ultimate importance. What contributors share is a commitment to interrogating and developing the central theological issues at stake in a consideration of the filioque, thus advancing ecumenical theology and inter-communal dialogue without diluting the discussion. Contributors span the Christian traditions: Roman Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, and Pentecostal. Each of these traditions has its own set of theological assumptions, methods, and politics, many of which are on display in the essays which follow. Nonetheless it is only when we bring the wealth of learning and commitments from our own theological traditions to ecumenical dialogue that true progress can be made. It is in this spirit that the present essays have been conceived and are now presented in this form.

Quakers exist neither for themselves nor by themselves alone. Therefore, they ought not to construct Quaker theologies but rather quaker (verb) theology-to add their fingerprints to the larger conversation. David Johns contributes to a Quaker way of thinking theologically but also invites others to think through their denominational identities into a more expansive and ecumenical space.
