Behavioural pain responses are a good way to objectively measure pain in neonates; however caution should be taken as false results may emerge. Both the safety and efficacy of opioid use in neonates is questionable, sucrose and NNS should be considered in its place. Other non-pharmacological methods of pain relief have proven to be effective, and should be considered in combination with sucrose and NNS. Although sucrose has few short-term adverse effects further research is needed into the long-term effects of repeated doses. Conclusion: Sucrose and NNS do have an analgesic effect in neonates and work best in combination. Breastfeeding, should be encouraged m neonates undergoing painful procedures, but where the mother is unavailable or unable to breastfeed, sucrose and NNS are effective and safe to use.

Two pilot studies by Gaspar and Hughes (1990), and Gaspar and Hobus (1991) suggested that Non-nutrive sucking (NNS) has implications for reducing constipation among some elderly individuals. The effectiveness of the NNS intervention (sucking on paraffin sucker) was based on differences in stool weight, frequency, and consistency between one week of baseline and one week of intervention. NNS was successful for the treatment of constipation for individuals who were more dependent, had a lower nutritional status, and were older.
