This original and provocative work begins by examining the shift of scientific paradigms that took place in the late eighteenth century, a shift illustrated by the report of a French Royal Commission appointed in 1784 to investigate Mesmerism. The reactions to Mesmerism among the Commission members--in particular the chemist Lavoisier and the botanist Jussieu--crystallized conflicts about the notion of reason and its role as a scientific ideal, about how science ought to be done. The Commission's denunciation of Mesmerism as the work of the "imagination" then serves as the starting point for the authors' reconsideration of the history of psychoanalysis, notably its suppression and repression of phenomena associated with hypnosis--imagination, suggestion, and empathy--in its search to establish itself as a science in accord with the new ideal of scientific reason. Examining the new and often troubled relationship in psychoanalysis between therapeutic effectiveness and advances in theory, the authors highlight the challenge to Freudian ideals in the 1920's by Otto Rank and Sandor Ferenczi. The discrediting of Ferenczi--engineered to a large extent by Ernest Jones and Freud himself--was an attempt to "purify" psychoanalysis of the effects of suggestion. The authors discuss Freud's own therapeutic nihilism occasioned by his recognition that suggestion, by means of the transference relationship, played an uncontrollable role in psychoanalytic therapy. In assessing Freud's legacy, the authors examine evolving notions of psychoanalysis, especially the role played by the effects of suggestion in recent theoretical representations of the development of the subject. Asserting that hypnosis and the challenge it poses to our understanding of human motivation, reason, and the mind/body relationship constitutes the fourth narcissistic wound to the human ego (after those introduced by Copernicus, Darwin, and Freud), the authors analyze Lacan's rejection of hypnosis and explain current resistance to hypnosis through its challenge to the modern scientific notion of reason.

Léon Chertok présentait ce livre comme " une véritable prise de conscience ", une brusque " prise de contact avec la réalité ". Dans ce livre, deux auteurs voisinent : le chercheur présentant ses résultats, construisant le problème de l'hypnose entre la psychanalyse et la biologie d'un côté et, de l'autre, l'hérétique qui va consacrer tous ses efforts à dénoncer la thèse officielle selon laquelle la psychanalyse aurait fait " rupture " avec l'hypnose. Pourtant, les expériences présentées dans ce livre sont elles aussi profondément hérétiques : " Je sais que pour avoir l'air sérieux en psychologie expérimentale, il faut obtenir des résultats reproductibles, faire des statistiques, mais ce type d'expérimentation systématique m'ennuie à mourir. " C'est ce refus de s'ennuyer qui l'amena à la démarche la plus risquée : renouer avec la vieille tradition des magnétiseurs. Mais en psychologie, la succession monotone de mise en chiffres et en échelles est-elle la condition d'une recherche " sérieuse " ou bien ne vise-t-elle qu'à masquer la différence qui sépare l'expérimentation créatrice des physiciens, des chimistes, des biologistes moléculaires et l'expérimentation bureaucratique qui préside en psychologie ? Pour les chercheurs en psychologie expérimentale, le laboratoire pourrait bien ne pas être un lieu de risque, mais a contrario une forteresse qui les protège. Léon Chertok aimait présenter l'hypnose comme une énigme qui se rit des définitions, une énigme à déchiffrer, non à respecter, mais surtout une énigme dont nous ne savons pas ce qu'elle met en jeu et qui oblige à la lucidité quant à ce que nous croyons savoir. Aussi curieux que cela puisse paraître, ce grand défenseur de l'hypnose n'en était pas un adepte. S'il désignait l'hypnose comme nécessaire à la formation de l'analyste, c'était précisément parce qu'il ressentait comme quelque peu ridicule la position de l'hypnotiseur. Ce qui, en revanche, l'intéressait, ce qui le hantait, et qu'il ne pouvait supporter, c'était l'oubli, la possibilité que ce qui pose problème puisse être recouvert par l'oubli. Léon Chertok demandait que l'on s'intéresse à l'hypnose en tant " qu'empêcheuse de penser en rond ". Il exigeait ainsi ce qui est le plus souvent défini comme le contraire de l'hypnose : c'est-à-dire la mémoire, la vigilance et la lucidité.

Il y raconte librement les recherches qu’il a menées dans le Laboratoire d’hypnose expérimentale qu’il a créé en 1971. On y voit le grand Léon Chertok à l’œuvre auprès de patients hypnotisés ; on assiste surtout à sa prise de conscience du non-dit fondateur de la psychanalyse. Et s’il fallait finalement prendre au sérieux le pessimisme final de Freud sur l’efficacité thérapeutique de la psychanalyse ? Et si la psychanalyse n’était qu’une vaste tentative pour éviter les questions que pose l’hypnose ? Et si l’hypnose nous renvoyait au fait que nous ne comprenons toujours pas le fonctionnement psychique et la relation ? Une réédition indispensable !
