Excerpt from Nonlinear Buckling of Rectangular Plates The extensive numerical results are used to study the formation of boundary layers and the related problem of the plate's ultimate load. On the basis of the numerical results, an energy mechanism is proposed to explain a mode-jumping. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Non-Linear Bending and Buckling of Circular Plates In this paper we consider a thin circular elastic plate of thickness t and radius R subjected either to a uniform lateral pressure, p, or to a uniform edge thrust, f. The first loading situation is referred to as a bending problem and the second as a buckling problem. In both cases only rotationally symmetric deformations will be considered so that all deflections and stresses are functions of a single radial coordinate, r. It is well known that the classical linear theory of plates yields solutions of these problems which are valid only for a limited range of low loads. For larger values of p and f it is necessary to apply non-linear plate theories which allow for finite deflections and account for the interaction of membrane and bending stresses. Thus we employ the von Karman equations [1] which are based on a non-linear theory of elasticity with infinitesimal strains and are valid for flat plates undergoing small but finite displacements. For rotationally symmetric deformations of circular plates these equations reduce to two coupled second order non - linear ordinary differential equations. Stop searching through the endless amount of literature to find the most recent information on plate buckling. The authors of Handbook of Thin Plate Buckling and Post Buckling have already done the work for you. Detailed and clearly written, the book contains a comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of the buckling and postbuckling behavior of perfect and imperfect thin plates. The authors study, in detail and with specific solved examples, the essential factors that influence critical buckling loads, initial mode shapes, and postbuckling behavior for thin plates. Through their analysis of rectangular, circular, and annular plates, they present valuable information, some of which has never before been published in book form. Such topics include hygrothermal buckling, viscoelastic and plastic buckling, and buckling of various thickness plates. With this important collection, the Handbook of Thin Plate Buckling and Post Buckling provides you with a one-stop source of current research findings.

Excerpt from The Buckling of a Thick Circular Plate Using a Non-Linear Theory The Object of this paper is to study the stability of equilibrium of an isotropic circular cylinder when compressed along its curved lateral surface. The compression on the curved part Of the boundary is assumed to be such that the generators of the cylinder remain Vertical straight lines, but so that no shear stress is developed: it is as though the cylinder were compressed by shrinking a very stiff greased ring down on it. The plane faces are assumed to be free of stress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Relaxation and successive approximation methods are used to solve Von Karman's equations as applied to initially flat, rectangular plates with large deflections under either normal pressure or combined normal pressure and side thrust, and several specific cases are analyzed. The general method developed may be applied to bending and combined bending and buckling problems with practically any boundary conditions to any required degree of accuracy or applied to solve the membrane theory of the plate which applies when the deflection is very large in comparison with the thickness of the plate.
