Die Arbeit eröffnet eine neue Perspektive auf das eigentümliche Phänomen, dass bestimmte komplexe Verben nicht in Verbzweitstellung (V2) auftreten können. Sätze wie „Der Regisseur uraufführt das Stück.“ bzw. „Der Regisseur führt das Stück urauf.“ werden allgemein als ungrammatikalisch abgewiesen. In Verbletztstellung („..., dass der Regisseur das Stück uraufführt.“) können diese Verben allerdings problemlos verwendet werden. Während bisherige Analysen einen monokausalen Erklärungsansatz für die Stellungsrestriktion verfolgten, wird mittels empirischer Verfahren gezeigt, dass das Phänomen durch ein komplexes Zusammenspiel verschiedenster Faktoren begründet ist. Die Kernthese ist, dass die meisten der sog. NonV2-Verben gar keine Verben sind, sondern Substantive oder Adjektive. Faktoren, die gemeinhin als stellungsrestringierend gelten, hemmen letztlich das Auftreten finiter Verbformen. Dies spricht dafür, dass eine syntaktische Blockierungsregel als unabhängiges Phänomen gar nicht existiert, sondern ein Epiphänomen anderer Faktoren darstellt.

Both compounds and multi-word expressions are complex lexical units, made up of at least two constituents. The most basic difference is that the former are morphological objects and the latter result from syntactic processes. However, the exact demarcation between compounds and multi-word expressions differs greatly from language to language and is often a matter of debate in and across languages. Similarly debated is whether and how these two different kinds of units complement or compete with each other. The volume presents an overview of compounds and multi-word expressions in a variety of European languages. Central questions that are discussed for each language concern the formal distinction between compounds and multi-word expressions, their formation and their status in lexicon and grammar. The volume contains chapters on German, English, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Polish, Finnish, and Hungarian as well as a contrastive overview with a focus on German. It brings together insights from word-formation theory, phraseology and theory of grammar and aims to contribute to the understanding of the lexicon, both from a language-specific and cross-linguistic perspective.

This book, the first systematic exploration of the third person in English, German, and French, takes a fresh look at person reference within the realm of political discourse. By focusing on the newly refined speech role of the target, attention is given to the continuity between second and third grammatical persons as a system. The role played by third-person forms in creating and maintaining interpersonal relationships in discourse has been surprisingly overlooked. The Twelfth International Conference on Historical Linguistics, which is the major forum for the presentation of work in progress in the field of diachronic linguistics, took place at the University of Manchester in August 1995. The quality and breadth of the abstracts submitted for the general programme was such that four parallel sessions were needed throughout the conference. The present volume contains selected papers which deal with the Germanic languages. A companion volume, edited by J.C. Smith and Delia Bentley, contains papers on general problems in historical linguistics and studies of non-Germanic languages. The conference reflected the current health of diachronic linguistics. There were more papers and more participants than at past conferences, and the discussion covered a broader range of languages than hitherto. Sometimes it has been possible to isolate a particular preoccupation which has dominated much of the conference; but the overall impression to be gained from the Manchester meeting was one of stimulating diversity — the discipline appears to be moving forward on many fronts simultaneously, yet without losing focus. This stimulating diversity is well reflected in this important collection.
