Vijftig jaar geleden trokken de eerste bewoners van de Amsterdamse tuinstad Slotervaart in hun huizen. Ter gelegenheid van dit jubileum verschijnt De stad is nooit af. Historica Maili Blauw beschrijft daarin de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling van het tegenwoordige stadsdeel Slotervaart. De nadruk ligt op de oude uitbreidingsgebieden Slotervaart, Overtoomse Veld en Westlandgracht. De plannen hiervoor werden in de jaren vijftig ontwikkeld en uitgevoerd, als uitwerking van het Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan van Amsterdam uit de jaren dertig. Toen de wijken waren gerealiseerd was het gebied nog niet ‘af’. In de jaren tachtig en negentig volgden woningbouwplannen in het kader van het verdichtingsbeleid van Amsterdam. In de jaren negentig werd bovendien een proces van stedelijke vernieuwing in gang gezet, dat onder andere zal leiden tot meer woningbouw in Amsterdam-West. De achtergrond van al deze ontwikkelingen vormt de grote kwantitatieve en kwalitatieve woningbehoefte van Amsterdam.

Agricultural and food consumption practices are the most important contributors to ecosystem degradation and climate change. Consumers are called on to take responsibility for sustainable development; to consider the environment in their everyday life, to choose more sustainably produced goods and services. However, often consumers are not directly involved in food production and preparation. Today many of the meals we eat are prepared by someone other than ourselves. In addition, environmental and social issues of food production might be important to us but they have to be weighed up against a range of situational and personal considerations. Thus 'making a sustainable choice' can be far from straightforward. This book explores the question 'how sustainable food consumption can be encouraged' using social practices theory. This approach focuses not on the individual behaviour of consumers, but on everyday food practices (like shopping for food, eating lunch at work, etc.) and their context. The book discusses how Dutch consumers engage in sustainable food consumption on an everyday basis, and how consumers with different grocery shopping practices differ in this engagement. A second study considers the sustainable development of food provisioning within business catering (food procurement and provisioning). Here we discover the importance of food professionals and the opportunities that canteens and kitchens offer to explore more sustainable ways of eating. Both studies illustrate how a context-oriented approach leads to insights on where we find leverage points for changing consumption patterns.

This dissertation’s purpose is to concretise pedagogical concepts that help us think about the voices and positions of children in vulnerable situations in contemporary contexts of educating and researching. What matters when thinking about children’s voices, roles and positions in pedagogical and research spaces entangled with our own roles, positions and ethics? This doctoral study is built around four intra-active encounters within pedagogical spaces in Flanders where we bring in a posthuman reconceptualisation of voice to understand and value the entangled, collective and supported ways in which children become present in research. Each intra-active encounter sheds light on methodological and ethico-epistemo-ontological aspects of assembling children’s (posthuman) voices in research and possible creative and participatory ways of doing so. We describe five helpful movements when engaging with and listening to children in intra-active pedagogical and research encounters. Five movements that concretise listening to children’s voices in vulnerable situations and have the potential to transform an encounter into intra-active encounters of genuinely listening. This dissertation will be thought-provoking for practitioners in education and welfare contexts as well as for students and researchers that have the intention of doing research with (vulnerable) children in pedagogical contexts.
