Anthony R. Birley, a leading authority in the field of Roman prosopography and well known for his biographies of the emperors Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus, was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Manchester from 1974-1990 and at the Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf from 1990 until retirement in 2002. Friends, colleagues and pupils have offered him A Roman Miscellany, on a rich variety of topics relating to the Roman Empire, a Festschrift for an outstanding scholar. Eight contributions are in English, one - an excerpt from a historical novel - is in French, the rest are in German. The book is edited by Birleys last three Duesseldorf pupils. After a short introduction, by Hirschmann and Krieckhaus (Statt eines Vorwortes), and a Postscript by Birley himself, there follow the contributions by Bruno Bleckmann (Kritische Passagen zu Konstantin in der Vita Constantini des Eusebios), Lukas de Blois (Soldiers and Leaders in Plutarchs Galba and Otho), Hannah M. Cotton (In Lieu of an Article: Reflexions on Hadrian, Antiochus Epiphanes and the Jews), Werner Eck and Andreas Pangerl (Neue Diplome fuer die Hilfstruppen von Britannia), Mark Hassall (Footnotes to The Fasti), Vera E. Hirschmann (Die phrygische Opposition. Zu Novatianern und Montanisten im westlichen Kleinasien), Peter Lampe (Paulinos Mystes), David Mattingly (Urbanism, epigraphy and identity in the towns of Britain under Roman Rule), François Paschoud (Sulpicii Alexandri ex agente in rebus De uita sua), Olli Salomies (Choosing a Cognomen in Rome. Some Aspects), Hans M. Schellenberg (Anmerkungen zu Heron von Alexandria und seinem Werk ueber den Geschuetzbau), Stefan Sommer (Vereinigungen in Tarsos), Richard Talbert (A Forgotten Masterpiece of Cartography for Roman Historians: Pierre Lapies Orbis Romanus ad Illustranda Itineraria (1845)), Konrad Vössing (Sallust und das 'Massaker von Cirta' 112 v.Chr. (Sall. Iug. 26)), Klaus Wachtel (Fragment einer Bauinschrift aus Sexaginta Prista (Moesia inferior)), Everett L. Wheeler (Pullarii, Marsi, Haruspices, and Sacerdotes in the Roman Imperial Army), David Whitehead (Apollodorus Poliorketika: Author, Date, Dedicatee), Ruprecht Ziegler (Zur Muenzemission in Anemurion (Kilikien) unter Kaiser Maximinus Thrax), Hans M. Schellenberg (Danksagungen mit einer Anmerkung zum Vorhandensein der Vielzahl persönlicher Fotografien), and Birleys Bibliography from 1961 to 2007. Historical Dictionary Of Austria written by Paula Sutter Fichtner and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-11 with History categories.

Austrians today often seem to believe that they have two histories. One is their republican present; the other, the centuries that their forebears spent as part of the multi-ethnic Habsburg Empire. Contemporary Austria is a fixture among Europe's democracies. Yet, it did not achieve this state easily: World War I, the unification with Germany in 1938, and World War II were catastrophes for Austria. In 1995, it became part of the European Union, and its government, culture, and egalitarian economy are far cries from the monarchical and highly stratified society of the old Empire. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Austria has been thoroughly updated and greatly expanded. Through its chronology, introductory essay, appendix, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries, greater attention has been given to foreign affairs, economic institutions and policies, social issues, religion, and politics.

Prehistoric Farming In Europe written by Graeme Barker and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985-07-11 with Social Science categories.

Drawing upon his own extensive knowledge of European archaeology, Graeme Barker has impressively integrated the full range of archaeological data to produce in this book a masterly account of prehistoric farming in Europe on a unique scale. He makes use of modern archaeological techniques to reconstruct the lives of prehistoric farmers in remarkable detail. Not only do we now have a vivid picture of the prehistoric farmyard, but we know what animals were kept, how they were fed and why they were bred. Evidence for crops grown and techniques of cultivation and husbandry helps recreate the prehistoric landscape. Even the social organisation that determined the use of resources, and provided the crucial stimulus for agricultural change, can be relived. Graeme Barker develops his argument through analogies with the agricultural history of classical and medieval Europe and concludes that today's industrial farmers can learn much from the successes and failures of early European farming.
