Este libro es resultado de una investigación sobre aspectos de la historia y la actualidad de América Latina y particularmente de los seis países analizados, los cuales constituyen las economías más desarrolladas. Ocupan 79,17% del territorio latinoamericano, representan 74,85% del total de los habitantes de la región y contienen 82,24% del PIB regional. La historia de la conquista y de la estructuración de la producción con base en las haciendas y las minas en la colonia fueron situaciones de explotación humana violenta y ambientalmente depredadora. La formación de los seis Estados Nacionales fue caótica y desordenada por la inexperiencia en la administración pública de esos inmensos territorios, sobre los cuales las clases dominantes mantuvieron y ampliaron la propiedad de la tierra después de la independencia. La situación actual muestra grandes desigualdades sociales y deficiencias en servicios básicos y equipamientos sociales, no obstante los esfuerzos realizados por algunos gobiernos progresistas en esos países. El empleo, especialmente para los jóvenes y mujeres es un desafío, es muy alta la informalidad laboral, los salarios son bajos, sin seguridad social y en condiciones deficientes para desarrollar las actividades propias del trabajo. En las grandes empresas los salarios son altamente desiguales, lo que muestra que el capital privado determina las desigualdades sociales, tanto por la concentración de sus capitales privados, bien como por la estructura estratificada de los salarios de sus trabajadores y funcionarios. Los principales grupos económicos de América Latina son, predominantemente, comerciantes y vendedores de servicios, muchos de capital extranjero, lo que demuestra que son poco productivos, y por tanto, poco contribuyen para la generación de valor y a la riqueza latinoamericana. Por el contrario, estos grupos de comerciantes substraen el valor generado en la producción nacional, mediante la venta de sus productos importados y la intermediación en las ventas de los propios productos nacionales en sus almacenes y exportan sus ganancias obtenidas con la especulación de los precios.
